Anyone Remember....

The huge phone that was in Epcot, I think Communicore West. I remember going into the glass booth, calling family back home, & bragging about the nice weather while they were suffering in the cold Michigan winter.

That was great. What a different era it was, pre-cell-phone, pre-Skype, pre-speaker-phone. It was such an unusual experience to be able to have everyone in the room calling anywhere else in the US for free. My family used to go in and call my grandma while we were all together. There is a call-anywhere booth inside Tomorrowland outside the Astro Orbiters.

That big phone was still there in September of 1995, I remember we used it to call.

I used it on vacation in 1994 to call back to work and tease all my friends about where I was. Communicore was actually fairly cutting edge back then.

It was there right up until the AT&T sponsorship of SSE was pulled. Every trip I'd go to it to call back home. It was basically just a giant speakerphone but there is nothing like dialing with those gigantic buttons. I have tons of pictures of me calling family from it. I was so sad when it was gone.

Right after the sponsorship was pulled and the "tree" was boarded up... all they did was paint the inside of the windows of each little "booth" until they could get it all pulled. If I remember right I got a picture of it through a small scratched up area of the paint... looking all dark and dismal.

I do but none are digital and I don't yet have a photo scanner. That said however, it was only a few years ago that it was removed... I suppose technically it wasn't removed until very recently when the Post Show was finally redone (it sat there for awhile until Seimens came in to do it).

How long ago was that? And ratio (phone to person) about how big was this phone?

I remember using that phone back in the winter of 1994. I was visiting friends and called into work to say hi to co-workers and wound up being yelled at by my boss for not finishing something before I left on vacation. Oh well, I had fun anyway. And that was my last trip until 2001 so I'm glad I went and got to experience a couple things that weren;'t there when I went back in 2001 (Horizons & World of Motion)
