WDW: A History In Postcards
There's an island you can see from River Country out in Bay Lake it was called Discovery Island, and yes it was a bird sanctuary and had exhibits with birds and other animals as well, Lou has this listing on it:

Is that why RC was closed, a bacteria issue? Or something else? I have fond memories of going there when I was a kid. Shame it is closed and not being used.

Yep, Brain-Eating Amoeba have infected many lakes around Florida, including those at WDW. They're also the reason the closed the beaches at the Poly.

I think River Country was closed for a variety of reasons. I've read the water quality was a factor but I also read parking was a bigger issue. For RC guests who didn't stay at Ft. Wilderness, parking was a major problem. Guests needed to be shuttled to and from the park. Think of the expense of running shuttles all day vs opening 2 new waterparks where shuttles aren't needed. Extra expense is what killed RC.
