Discovery Island
I was just wondering if anyone remembers it or if anyone knows what its purpose is now.
no, I'm not talking about the Discovery Island at Animal Kingdom, i'm talking about the Discovery Island, the island in the middle of the seven seas lagoon for those of you who do not know. I was amused that the middle section of Animal Kingdom had the same name.
What happened to all the birds on it? Anyone know? Where they just relocated to AK I wonder?
Also what are your memories of it?
I know I had been there a couple times, but my memories are far and few between unfortunately, so I'd love to hear what you all remember!

Discovery Island is actually in the middle of Bay Lake, not the Seven Seas Lagoon, but yes, all birds were relocated to DAK. I believe the island was closed because of health/saftey issues, but I could be mistaken.
And yes, the Discovery Island in DAK was named after the original island; in fact, the DAK island was originally called "Safari Village," but the name was later changed.

When Walt was searching for land in Florida, the site they selected included a large lake with an island in the middle of it. The lake was Bay Lake, and they felt that the natural lake was an attractive feature of the property. But because of the poor water quality, the lake was drained and the muck at the bottom was cleaned out. Underneath, they found lots of white sand, which was used to create the beaches at the different hotels which were under construction. The lake was then refilled.
Seven Seas Lagoon was created when they used the dirt from the area to cover the "first floor" of the Magic Kingdom. The first floor is now known as the "utildors"

Sorry again - Bay Lake is not man-made. Just Seven Seas Lagoon. (Magic Kingdom Area).

I went there twice and it was a nice peaceful place to visit. they had the world's largest rodent there as well as an American Bald Eagle.
They had several shows they put on, one was similar to Flights of Wonder and one about snakes.
There are plenty of birds that still call it "home" , but these birds were not part of the exhibits.

We really enjoyed Discovery Island. It was so peaceful out there. I especially liked how it looked in the early years of WDW with the shipwreck on the shore.
Whenever we rent boats at the MK resorts, my daughter and I always take a slow cruise around the island and reminisce.
We do the same thing by River Country, too . . .

That's sad. I stare at it now wondering if they are ever gonna do anything with it or just let it sit there. I'd love to rent a boat and go up there and yeah. :-)

I went there when I was a kid and my mom dropped the lense cap for her camera in the flamingo water. Luckily someone was feeding them at the time and fished it out for her. It was kind of funny.

I vaguely recall the boat ride over, as well as the incredible number of birds that were there. Oddly enough, I remember how cool I thought the view was from the island to the other resorts, etc. I know my dad loved that place!

I have pictures of me being around birds from a trip to WDW from 1979. I thought it might have been from another tourist area, but maybe it was Discovery Island.

I remember the birds too because I remember I went with my dad and his friend once, and his dad absolutely HATES birds, so we had to convince him to go to begin with and then a bird pooped on his hat. That was great. lol. I have no clue when that was though, but now that I think about it, I remember it.
