Kids watch as ice show skater is hurt in stunt

BY HALLEY BONDY and DAVE GOLDINER
    DAILY NEWS WRITERS

Children and parents watching a Disney on Ice performance got quite a scare yesterday when a skater botched a stunt and slammed headfirst to the rink at Nassau Coliseum.

The audience gasped as the as-yetunnamed performer lay motionless on the ice for more than a minute after falling more than 10 feet while reenacting a scene from "The Little Mermaid" during the "Princess Wishes" ice show.

"Is he hurt?" one child asked.

"Does he need a Band-Aid?" asked another.

Some shaken families walked to the exits as an announcer said there would be a 10-minute "intermission" in the midmorning show. After the awkward pause, a stretcher was brought onto the ice and the performer carried out. He was later taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where his injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

"They are professionals, they are highly trained," said Lisa Taylor, a Disney on Ice spokeswoman. "But it is live entertainment and what we do is risky."

The frightening fall came after the skater was sent hurtling into the air when two other performers hopped onto the other end of a seesaw. He was supposed to land in a chair suspended by a pole, but missed the mark.

I 'm going to the show this afternoon at the same venue. I wonder if they will do the same trick?

The acrobatics they do in that part of the show is quite amazing. (It would be impressive even if they weren't on ice skates!) They actually do a few other stunts before that part. Needless to say there were lots of ohs and ahs. We saw it in Baltimore a few weeks ago.

They would have to get me a bigger chair so I wouldn't miss. Knowing me, I would end up like that guy, a pile on the ice!

Wait..so the stunt person stayed motionless because he/she didn't want to take the chance of moving and then majorly hurting themself bc of the move?? -sorry kinda confused-

He won't win the MVP or be voted into the Hall of Fame........then again, some heroes don't play games.

Saw the show today, pretty good. They have to have backup people just in case someone get's hurt or sick.

Ice accidents happen pretty often, I just remember some great ones from watching the Olympics, so I'm not surprised, I hope the performer is okay.

My daughter and neice got chosen to be in the show last night. They got to sit in a boat and get whooshed across the ice. I don't know who was more excited them or me. My daugher was in a Disney show! I'm proud and jealous all at the same time.
