Sorry for the necro post, but having just spent a week in Feb 2012 at Port Orleans Riverside and a weekend at All Star Music, I can say the free WiFi is not much better then 3G.
I don't discount that some guests would spend more time in their rooms or by the pools over the parks if they fired up their laptops.

Disney issued a non-committal message about the installation of Internet enhancements at the Walt Disney World resort hotels. No word on whether it means that WiFi connectivity is being rolled out, whether the Next Generation Initiative will bear fruit in allowing advance Fastpass reservations, or if it'll be only minimally accessible to guests. We'll have more when there's actually news to report on this.

but 3G may cost you $$ depending on your cell data plan

Exactly.
Even if it weren't as good as 3G you'd be better off using it.
