Saving for Vacation

We have a large whiskey jar at home which we save loose change in all year round. The top is sealled (apart from a coin slot) to stop anybody 'Penny Pinching'!! If you empty your pockets at the end of the day, you don't miss the small chnage BUT it soon adds up!! :yes:
Over the course of this year alone (since January) we have saved up about £400 English pounds (approx. $650). This money certainly goes along way as spending money when on holiday / vacation. :yes:
We will be saving all this money for our next visit in 2006... Who knows how much there'll be then... and the good thing is we haven't really missed the money!!!

I have a 5 gallon water jug that we fill up with loose change. I have been doing this for years, whatever is in the jug will be our spending money for Disney, I alot of the time I usually cash it in by know. But I have holded off doing so, cause I sent a goal this year to wait till the week before we leave to cash it in. And it is more then half full right right, and it is driving me crazy, I can't wait to find out how much I have, I think I have close to 1600.00. I also plan my trip and get my airline tickets early, this way I get them cheap. I have everything paid for. And I just need the spending money to go with.

Every night all my change goes into a jar and just before we go on a vacation we cash it in to spend on a special souvenir.

(Note: Last year I decided that I wouldn't spend any singles either, but it got to be a real pain in the **** to pay $5 for a cup of coffee, so I just kept it to change. Don't spend any change.)

I throw all change into a mug at the end of every day. But I do the same with $1 bills. It can get tedious, but it adds up.

And anytime I have "found money" I head to my Disney store and buy some Disney Dollars. Then, even if tempted, I can't spend the money until I get to WDW!!!!

i have done a bunch of things

i save all change except quarters in one bank, quarters in a seperate one

a jar holds dollar bills and fives.

i started really looking at the stuff i had around the house and went on ebay and sold a bunch of things and offered to do it for others while i kept a percentage.

i put that money and some money from each pay check into an account i opened at ingdirect.com it's completely free and my money earns interest until i want it (and there are no atms or anything for me to get my money out of.

This really doesn't count as saving because it isn't happening yet.

But, next year, my third child is going to school and the money we usually spend on daycare will go in a vacation fund. That will be using to pay for our tickets, airfare, etc.

Currently, I have a huge "gift" baby bottle that is a bank. I put all change I find cleaning the kids rooms, doing laundry, or in my pocket at night. I also put in money for my kids' good grades. "They" get 25 cents for 100's, 10 cents for 90's, 5 cents for 80's, 1 cent for 70's and anything lower than 70 cost them 25 cents. So far we have "saved" $10 in 2 weeks on that trick.

It also keeps their grades up and get them motivated. They go in and shake the bottle a lot just to hear it.

i've got a little tin "no-touchy" box (i have no idea what it's from, come to think of it). An ocassional dollar bill or two gets tossed in there, as well as all my spare change, excluding quarters, which go into a plastic tube (which I sadly have to use for laundry at my apartment complex).

It adds up real slow however, because I very rarely spend cash. I eat many of my meals on campus, paid for in advance, and really only go shopping about once every other week for groceries and necessities, and most of the time I pay for that with my debit card. Come to think of it, almost all of the cash I spend is on parking and food at WDW! But on the few times I do need to make a cash withdrawal, one of the first things I do is take a dollar or two of that total withdrawal and put it in my little tin box so I don't unintentionally spend it. Have a "Vacation Sale"

Have a garage/yard sale to help raise money for your vacation. Get rid of all of your unused stuff that you have collecting dust in your home. We have been able to not only unload some of our junk on other people, but also raise some serious mula in the process.

Have your friends and family donate items to your cause. Let everyone know why you are having the sale and volunteer to pick up their items to include in your sale.

My friend and I hit The World last November and we found that by planning ahead of time we were able to save a ton of money. We set timelines for ourselves to pay for hotel, tickets, and airfare (about one expense every 3 months). That way our large expenses were paid for in advance and we were able to spread them out rather than paying for them all at once.

Also, I looked at my monthly bills and usual expenses and set myself a budget that I felt I could easily work with. I got paid every 2 weeks and based my expenses on that timeline, paycheck to paycheck. Being a single gal in Boston (at the time), a night out can get pretty expensive so I decided to budget myself $100 for each 2 week stretch. I went to the ATM each payday, took out that money, and it was all I was able to spend for 2 weeks. The day before I got paid I took whatever was left in my wallet and put it away in a lockbox at home. I found it not only helped me save up for the trip, but it also prevented me from going out to dinner, having a few drinks too many, or buying that pair of shoes that I really didn't need. Some weeks I was able to put away only a few dollars, but sometimes I found myself with up to $75 left over.

I hear ya... darn coin laundry. I keep thinking "That's twenty-five pennies!!!" everytime I put in another quarter. It seems so much more expensive when you are in the habit and mindset of picking up lose change off the sidewalk. or anywhere you can. Pennies, although not fast money by any means, are still money, and do add up eventually!

BTW, Chris... Love the Vacation Sale idea. Too bad all my junk is back home in CT and I'm down here in FL with all my necessary stuff. But I'll take that idea to heart when I start planning for my NEXT trip, whenever that might be!

yeah, everytime something is a multiple of 25 cents i think wow, i could have done a load of laundry!
