September 24th 2006 episode -Jungle Cruise

You did a really nice tribute to the Jungle Cruise, and talked a bit about the changes to the Jungle Cruise queue over the years. During one trip I took in 1997 (My second WDW trip), the queue was undergoing a re-hab. When I got home I looked up Jungle Cruise Queue and found a great back story for the Disneyland JC queue, for many years the link to this page was broken as the guy changed the page, and then later deleted it . Recently I took at trip over to the wayback machine at Archive.org and dug up this really neat back story and added it to my site.

I loved the ride through on the pod cast, the Skipper was good one of the better ones for sure, and he told my favoritie joke the one before entering the temple...."I don't know where this is going to lead folks, could be a dead end, could be burried treasure, knowing Disney though it's probably only a gift shop."

Lou you mentioned that at one time the Jungle Cruise used Chevy Chevette engines, but the Chevette wasn't out when WDW first opered was it? and certainly not when Disneyland opened opened...it looks like theres a little bit more JC power train trivia out there for you :-)

it's nice to hear that the JC ships still use LNG there were a whole slew of things that Disney was planning on using LNG to power in cluding the motor launces on the Seven Seas Lagoon, and the parking lot trams, many of the things that were originally on LNG are no longer, though now that this technology is getting to be more common I usee they could go back to it if they really wanted to now.

Lou and Nathan,
That was a great report on the Jungle Cruise. I just closed my eyes and pretended I was there. The fun part of riding JC is you never know for sure what the banter will be between the skipper and the guests.

I loved the podcast, of course, but I nearly jumped out of my skin when the gun went off!

Did anyone else notice the kid saying "That was f&^*#$% funny!" At the end of the recording? I may just have a potty mouth, but it made me snicker. I don't know if Lou or Nathan caught it, but I did.. lol Besides that, the Skipper on that particular cruise was so funny, I loved every minute of that recording. ALSO does anyone have access to the "I love Disco" chant? I'd love to hear it if anyone has a recording of it!

And also, thanks for playing my voicemail guys! I loved hearing your opinions and I love that we all share this passion for all things Disney (or just about, right Nathan? *cough disneyland cough* ) Being an Imagineer (or CEO) are definitely dream jobs of mine as well.. but like you said.. if I could even just sell turkey legs or direct guests around the parks I would enjoy that just as much. I hope my marketing major takes me deeep within the company so I can come up with ways to share my love of Disney with everyone around the world.

Y'all mentioned that you had some trepidation about seeing changes to the Jungle Cruise. I could feel this way too, but the most recent changes at Disneylands Jungle Cruise were so positive that I can't help but be hopeful that if they do these changes they will do them right. As to why the Jungle Cruises rehab would have a so much higher budget I can think of three possible reasons.

1. Perhaps this re-hab being discussed is possibly in it's early blue-sky stages, and the amount mentioned is just a "if we throw everything we want into it" number.

2. The Jungle Cruise at WDW's Magic Kingdom may have had much more limited rehabs over the past 30 years than Disneylands has (for one thing didn't Disneylands get a major re-hab while it was down in 1993-4 ?) and it may simply be time to replace almost all the old basic infrastructure that is simply worn out after 35 years of use. If this is the case you might not actually be able to see any changes to the ride, or they might be very tiny ones, as we could simply get the same old ride re-built. I actually think this is the most likely explanation.

3. It really will be a major re-hab, with this kind of money perhaps they could even lengthen the ride. Although this opens up the possibility that they could really mess the attraction up, they could also make it great.

One blue sky dreaming possibility that occurred to me would be to open up some of the old canal that circles the Swiss Family Treehouse and move the Jungle Cruises entrance back that way, you could run the entrance to the queue all the way back to near the entrance to Adventureland, perhaps with a nice bridge across the canal that would prove a great view of the loading area as you slowly descend into the lower level where the JC boats are. this would open up the old loading area for installation of new show scenes it's actually quite a wide area and perhaps some of it could also be used to improve the transition from the Aladdin courtyard to the Caribbean Square area, though it's hard to imagine that transition being too smooth with the Tiki Room right there, still perhaps some new things could be done to add interest to this area. One thing I'd really like to see in the Magic Kingdom is another sit-down restaurant, the recent temporary conversion of the Tomorrowland Terrace to accommodate the free dining Plan guests points up this need, now while I don't think that the area that would be freed up could support a restaurant, it could possibly allow some of the shops that are currently in other parts of Adventureland (preferably towards the front of the land where the Adventurland Veranda used to be, those shops could then be converted into dining area, or kitchen (since I think part of the reason the AV closed was due to tight allocation of kitchen space backstage). If you're not sure whare or what the Adventureland Veranda was, let me introduce you to Mike Lee's page on it:
http://home.cfl.rr.com/omniluxe/advv.htm
If that still would not yield enough space perhaps they could expand it into a two story dining establishment (much like the Columbia Harbor House) or even expand to use part of the "quiet area" behind Liberty Square, that would not be my first choice mind you, but if used for guest seating and done properly it could actually provide nice views of the hub (or plaza if you prefer).

of course all of this may be totally unrealistic, but it's fun to do a little "armchair imagineering" as they used to say of the laughing place pod cast.

That skipper was definitely better that ANY of the skippers I've ever had (all two of them). I was a little suprised he got away with some of those Disney jokes, but they were quite funny.

Haha, sorry guys, I should've kept my mouth shut! It didn't bother me although I know you guys are "family friendly" I just found it funny. I guess its hard to censor park recordings when you have no idea what people around you will say or do!

I'm also working on some ideas for questions for you guys and the podpeople.. seeing that this weeks didn't bring in much discussion, so I'm using my disney brain power to harvest a batch of questions that may turn out more intriguing to the podpeople. Keep it up guys!
