Port Orleans: French Quarter
Hi gang!
I just booked my resort for MouseFest 2004, and we decided to try a new hotel (as we often like to do). This time, we chose Port Orleans: French Quarter (got a great rate of $74 a night, too!)
Anyway, when I make my reservations, I often request a certain type of room and/or buidling (usually a good idea, especially if you don't want to be in a noisy area, far from the pool or main building, etc.). I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations when it comes to PO:FQ. I had requested a first floor in Bldg. 3 or 4 (next to the main bldg.), but understand that Bldg 5 is great too (close to that and pool, but far enough away so that it's not too noisy).
Any advice? Thanks!!

In 2002 I stayed in building 3 on the 2nd floor. I was close to the elevator, ice and wending machines and a set of stairs. I was also close to the parking lot. It was a short walk to the main building, but I usually drove my car over to the main parking area.
By the way Lou, you are paying less for your room than I am paying at Pop Century

Yeah, but I blew it and missed out on the $115 airfare!

Stayed in Building 5 3rd floor before the refurbishment. There were ducks outside in the gardens every morning. It is a lovely very quiet resort. They used to give you Mardi Gras beads at the entrance. A kind CM gave my wife 20 for her 2nd grade class at the time. I don't know if they still do it, but there used to be a boat to Downtown Disney. Very romantic at night. You might also want to try the sunken hot tub at night, but watch for skeeters.
P.S. Parking is kinda wacky at PO due to the "river." You have a longer walk it seems than at most resorts. Also, be sure to check out the street names. Contrary to some other posts, the bus service takes forever compared to the All-Stars because of stops at Dixie Landings, whatever it is called now, and I think DVC villas. However, ride to the Marketplace/Pleasure Island is short.

I've heard from others who mentioned Bldg. 5 quite a bit. Seems to be ideal location between pool and main building. Is that true? Is being close to the pool too noisy? Is it as close as it seems to the main bldg.? What about parking, etc.?
(Lou has new considerations now that he's traveling (i.e. carrying) a 9 m. old)

For building 3 parking was fine, about a football field away from my door.
I really like Rue Da Baga

Does anyone know how long the bus ride is from the French Quarter to the Magic Kindgom? We have reservations there in November, and I'm curious as to how long of a bus ride it is. I have found all kinds of reviews on various sites but no one seems to say how much time you spend on the buses.

It all depends where you are staying, but since the MK is about 5 miles from any of the non-monorail resorts you shoud count on at least 15 minutes. The ride from the French Quarter is slightly longer given the other stops. I would add another 5-10 minutes. Therefore, plan at least 30 minutes ahead of time and you should be AOK.

We stayed at POFQ on our last trip and POR the trip before that. I couldn't tell you actual minutes because we tend to be too excited and talk about what we are going to do on the way there.
Yes Jiminy, after picking up the POFQ guests the bus rounds POR. But it really isn't any different than having to make all of the rounds at Caribbean Beach. The one thing we liked was that at the end of the night when you are tired and want to get home, POFQ is the first stop on the way home.
And, yes the boats still run to DTD. A very nice relaxing ride. Although it does take longer than other transportation. A don't miss in my book. At least once during your trip.
Have fun!

Jiminy... I have never stayed at All Stars. I was told that they have one, central bus stop outside of the main building of each resort which means a lot of walking within the resort. Is that true?
I can only make comparisons of POFQ to POR CBR and Hotel Blvd., where I have stayed.

I haven't been to PO, but have a friend there this week.
I have been to the All Star Resorts (I stayed at Sports in late July this year and Movies last year) and, it's true. The bus stop at each Resort is outside the main building, which can be a long walk, depending where your room is located. If you stay at one, you'll stop at the other 2 (they run to Sports, Music, then Movies, in that order, if I recall correctly). If your room is at the back of the hotel, it may be easier to walk to the main building of the next one to pick up the bus. We stayed at the back of Sports, but could see the Music buildings across the parking lot.

Yes, there is quite a bit of walking at the All Stars, except ASMo is more compact. If you stay in a preferred room in the Fantasia buildings the walk is minimal.
