Question Disney in December

Hello everyone! Long-time lurker here, but there is just so much great information on this site that it does take a while to get caught up!

My family and I will be going to Disney World from Dec. 7 - 16th. This will be our first time to go in December. We went Oct. 4 - 12th in 2005, and had a great time with the Halloween party, less crowds and great weather. I have no idea what to expect in December as far as the weather, what rides will be shut down, and if there is anything new going on that has opened up since 2005. I have 2 small boys, 5 and 15 months (by the time we go), and I am a compulsive over-packer!! I'd like to cut down on the luggage as much as possible - should i pack sweatshirts, long sleeves, short sleeves? HELP! Any info or experiences you'd like to share from your December Disney Vacation is so much appreciated!!!

Thanks!! Amber

My friend from work (that used to be a Cast member) said that during the day long sleves and things to layer would work best and she told me that I should pack a sweatshirt, gloves, and things for the nights. I guess people don't realize how cold it gets after the sun goes down and that Disney ends up selling A LOT of colder weather items. Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the tips! I guess no matter how hard I try to avoid bringing 50 suitcases with us, I'll probably end up doing it any way!! I live in Texas, and I had heard that the weather here is about the same as Florida's. You never know when a cold front will come in and it'll be 30 degrees!!

I went last year during the first week of December and had a good time. I had packed long sleeves and one jacket. Of course, the only coldish night we had , I forgot my jacket in the hotel so I bought a cool sweatshirt. What a great excuse to shop! I never felt the need for gloves or a hat last year.

I'm from Texas also- 3.5 hours from Austin, 3 hours from Dallas...the weather was about the same as around here. It can get frigid if a cold front comes but then again in late November when I went a few years ago, it was over 80 every day. So there is no telling. I also pack a lot but I would rather have it and not use it than need it and not have it.

Have a fabulous trip!

weather here is kind of hit or miss as far as predicting, i would monitor the weather for the area in the weeks prior to your trip. perfect example is right now, late october and almost everyday is high 80's, nighttime, low 80's. and i'm on the coast, so inland around wdw is warmer

Early december is the perfect time to visit crowds wise.....you shouldn't have to wait in very many lines at all!

Weather wise - bring a little of everything. In early December it can still be in the 80's....or it can be quite chilly. Most days you will be comfortable in jeans and a tshirt with a sweatshirt to layer. Overpacking in this situation is not really a bad thing

As far as new things.....The Laugh Factory in MK is quite fun, and there is a new Finding Nemo ride in Epcot and show at AK. If you like rollercoaster you defintley need to try Expedition Everest at AK.

Make time to check out all the Christmas displays in the hotel lobbies (esp the Grand Floridian) and be sure to visit all the Santa's from around the world in Epcot.

Have fun - we may see you there, we're local and early Dec is my fave time to visit!

We went the first week in December last year and we were fine in tee shirts and long pants during the day. At night it could get a little cold and we put on sweatshirts. Crowds were great it got a little bussy at night with all the christmas stuff. The Osborins Festival of Dancing lights is a must see. There alsome, crowds were very hevy buy the lights so I would stay towards the front of the park until later becasue everyone seemed to go back to see the lights. Then after you did all the rides you wanted to do up front then work your way to the back. As far as I know I don't think that many rides are shut down and I actually don't remember any rides that are shut down. There may be some shut down for renovations and such, but I don't remember, lol. Have a great trip.

If you go to Walt Disney World Resort - Detecting Browser Properties . . . and click on parks, you can then look at the attractions/rides. They have flaged the newer ones and organized them into different categorys (fun for little ones, big thrills, etc.)

New since 2005:

Monsters Inc Laugh Floor
Rennovated Haunted Mansion
Rennovated Pirates of the Carribean
Gran Fiesta Tour (formerly El Rio Del Tiempo) in Epcot
New O Canada film
New American Adventure ending montage
Expedition Everest
Rennovated Spaceship Earth may or may not be open
"Green Team" less intense version of Mission: Space
Dream Along with Mickey stage show has replaced Cinderellabration
Disney Dreams Come True parade has replaced Share a Dream Come True parade
Seas with Nemo and Friends in the old Living Seas
Turtle Talk with Crush in the Seas pavilion
Finding Nemo musical in the Animal Kingdom

Lights Motors Action stunt show and Soarin' both opened in 2005, but I think it was around April or May, so they're probably not new to you.

As for weather, I suggest planning for both extremes. When the sun's up it can still be very hot (at least as far as this New Englander is concerned), but when you're standing there watching the parade, you might be shivvering...

the one time i was there in dec it was both warm and sunny and the cold too. the first couple days i was there it was warm enough for shorts and shirt and then temp dropped really bad and we had to wear our winter coats, gloves, and hats because it was so cold. we even took a couple of blankets into the park for when we were watching parades and to help keep us warm. i went between christmas and new years and was there for new years.

Howdy. I'm from Texas, too. East Texas. I know what y'all mean about the weather. My fiancee and I are going in December for our honeymoon. So excited. Last time I went in December, my dad and I saw the Candlelight Processional at EPCOT. What an experience! This year, it looks like we're going to make it for Kirk Cameron's narration. I'm so excited. I did get to see the Country Bears Christmas Special, but it looks like we won't get to see it this year. One thing I loved at EPCOT were the holiday speakers in the different countries. The decorations are also fantastic.
