I remember in HM (8 years ago that is!), near the beginging before you get on the actual ride, at one point your in a big room, and it feels like your going down, the paints slowly reveal themselves (by going up, or you going down), and my parents and i couldn't work out if we really did go down or just felt like it? :minnie:
At Disneyland you actually go down, it's an elevator. At WDW, the walls move up and you do not move up or down. In DL they did this due to space concerns and brought the same effect over to the WDW Mansion.

Yes, all four Haunted Mansions have a similar room.
DL and DLP are used as elevators, whereas WDW and TDL are not.

viks easy way to remember which is which----World has an "O" in the middle as does Fl'o'rida and Land has an "A" as does C'a'lifornia ...well.....they both have both but it helped me remember it ....or you could do it this way 'A'neheim, CA =Disneyl'a'nd 'O'rlando, FL = DisneyW'o'rld

Well, don't make fun of me, but I thought it meant moving in when I first read it too! But maybe it's this pain medicine. Who knows?
The next thing closest to the expanding room effect would be the old Hydrolaters in the Living Seas in EPCOT that did not move more than an inch (if that much), but you did think you were moving due to the walls moving and the water bubbles. A very convincing effect.Quote:

About Disneyland's Haunted Mansion: The main reason for the stretching room was to overcome a problem. There was not enough room inside the "berm" - the earthen mound/wall around Disneyland - for the attraction. The room acts as an elevator to lower guests to go under the berm and to the main attraction.
Pirates of the Carribbean does the same, with the drop in the attraction.
Clever, huh?
