Our Amtrak journey to the WL January 20..

Never done a trip report but here goes our 46th trip to WDW via Amtrak...

We board the train at 2 am but as usual, the train is running late, an hour late...oh well....the station we board at is unmanned so best be there and ready to board as they wait for no one...that eveining, we had 3 inches of snow and the temp was 10 degrees....unmanned means no one takes care of the snow, so we drag our suitcases to the pick up point, which is about 100 yards from where you park.....and we're really not dressed for the cold since we're headed to Florida and don't want to drag a lot of heavy clothes with us....I've never been so cold in my life, never shivered so hard either waiting the 5 minutes for the train to pull up....

All said and done, we're aboard, got our seats and into the warmth and we're off on the forst leg of the trip, Ohio to DC....we settle in and doze off.....we're in coach, grab some club car coffee and watch the countryside roll by.....we get into DC on time and have a 8 hour layover (hate this part) till we board the south bound train to Kissimmee.. The station is huge with tons of eateries and shopping venues and wife goes exploring while I tend the carry-ons.....again we board, snuggle in for the trip south and away we go...we picked up so Pot Belly subs for dinner and again we travel coach and cover up for the evening....

We arrive in Kissimmee on time and are greeted but the warm Florida sun at 1:30pm...our car service is there, we load up and head to our 30 minute grocery stop (Publix with a liquor store next door)...that done and loaded into the SUV we're off to the Wilderness Lodge..traffic rather thick this afternoon but we arrive in good time....

Ah, here we are again (over 10 stays at the WL) we're greeted, bell services takes care of the bags and goods and we're escorted inside to the on line check in process.....all is well, fly thru quickly and our room couldn't be in a nicer location....north wing, 4th floor facing the waterfalls....we don our suits and head for the pool....water not to my liking, rather on the chilly side but lounging in the Florida sun is good enough for me...

I'm not going to bore everyne reading about our park days but we went to every park for a few hours each day...mostly early morning, since we're early risers and the crowds were nil, everything just plain walk ons.....never used a fast pass at all....closures didn't bother us as all, been there enough times to not let it impact our trip. We never do dining plans but ate where we wanted, never had to follow a schedule, and some days jumped on the first bus at the depot.(never follow crowd prediction or tour plans)...all in all...fantastic trip...no rain at all, temos in the 80's all week....

Coming home is always the pits for us..no matter how many trips you take, leaving WDW and headed back to reality is awful...we bid good bye to WDW, our car service is there for pick up and we're off to the Kissimmee train station...same process as going down only in reverse fashion.....we arrive in Alliance Ohio around 2:30 am, train ran about an hour late...schlep our bags and Disney goodies the 100+ yards to our car, again down right cold out 20 degrees and fire up the car for some warmth and take the 45 minute drive home...

We're in house around 3:30 am, tired, and sad to be here in the cold north but at least there was no snow to greet us....this was our 46 trip to WDW, second this time of year...last time the weather was awful in Florida and I said never again but we were just in WDW past September and bought AP's, since we're headed down in late July with daughter and her family so decided to take a mid trip between September and July and get another use out of our AP's....great trip, weather cooperated....train ran close to on time without any glitches and all was well in WDW.....thanks for reading..

    Nice report!
Glad the weather cooperated and y'all had fun.
Sad about the leaving "home" part though.
    Just keep thinking...

Though it's not my favorite time of the year...love the heat of late September better.....the lack of crowds made touring very easy.....we cruised by alot of restaurants with hardly anyone in them.....WCC mostly empty throughout the whole day...same for Artist Point...everywhere you look, walkins welcome....

Parks were about the same, no lines.....never need a FP...we're early morning risers and are at the parks for RD....really not needed but we were there and had free rein to everything......saw a few tour groups with the flags and all, but we always went the opposite of their travel....

Would I go again in January.....don't think so....this was just a fill in trip from last September and this coming July and wanted to get another trip out of our AP's......to me it's the weather...too iffy though we had perfect weather, sunny and hot but the nights cool down the pool and makes day time too chilly to get in the water.....

You certainly lucked out with the weather for January! At least it was warm. We did last week of January and First week of February one year and were in sweatshirts, jeans and fall coats the entire time.

We have never been able to do the pools either, just too cool but we've always managed to hit the hot tubs in the evening when it is cool.

I'd like to take the train one time to WDW. Maybe fly back. If I might ask what does it cost to go from Ohio/DC to Florida?
    Some people are like Slinkies.

They aren't really good for anything,
but they still bring a smile to my face when I push them down a flight of stairs.

Hey, we did a January trip a couple of years ago with the same results.....way to cold plus wearing overcoats and sweats is not to our liking...even last December, first week was too cold for us....being from the northeast of Ohio, we're escaping the cold weather to enjoy the Florida sun and heat but those 2 trips just about cured us of winter travel to Florida.....though this trip was decent, lacking warm pool water was a bummer and as for the hot tubs, well those are too hot for me, could boil hot dogs in them (wish they'd tone down the temp some)

As for train travel...for the wife and I, round trip from Alliance Ohio...thru DC to Kissimmee Florida...450.00 coach seats. Price is not too bad, coach seats are nothing like the aorlines....totally recline, tons of space between your seat and the next, high backed (can't see the person behind or in fornt of you, very comfortable, has duplex receptacles for your use and a pull down tray in front again for your use...it's decent rolling across the country, only draw back for us is the 8 hour layover in DC...hate it...spent 9 hours sitting from home to DC and have another 17 hours of the same from DC to Kissmmee...those 8 hours in DC doing nothing kill me...but what can you do..part of the travel from west to east and then catching the north to south train is part of the game...

We pack a lunch and beverages, club car has drinks and some hand food and the dining car has a decent affair though pricey it's very good plus the observation car with the comfy seats and glass top is real nice but alot of our travel is during the night time....another boon since you can not pick the times of your travel but are set by Amtrak's schedule...

I don't fly anymore, driving well, I'd rather not but if push came to shove, I'd drive over fly and compared in cost, about equal to train travel and alot shorter time wise if we drove straight thru.....but very stressing for us anymore......you ought to give the train a shot, they used to have the fly and drive program, not sure if they still do.....

Re: Our Amtrak journey to the WL January 20..

We would have to leave out of Chicago which is do-able. I think it would be interesting. Out of Ohare a round trip is about $300 to MCO so train would be more expensive but a different adventure. My Sis is in Cleveland and we Fly that over drive and I've done Miami of Ohio to us too many times by car, not a fan. Driving to Orlando OK going down, horrible going home. But lately, the amount of extra time hang'n in airport, security etc., is getting real old too. Might be time for a train trip.

Yeah, it's the Chicago train coming thru Alliance we get on at 2am....usually runs late...my wife and her sister took a train trip up to Chicago (her sister's first train trip) for a day of shopping and stayed overnight....they had a ball and sister in law loved the train.....like I say, train travel isn't fast and can be downright boring for a fidgetity person...it's so layed back and relaxing but there's a limit to relaxing...know what you mean coming out of Chicago and on to DC then south to Kissimmee.....but we love the no security check in, being early for that, no baggage fees, bringing our own food and beverage aboard and the extra room in and around our seats.....sort of a trade off than flying...
