Try to think of a costume that reflects something from Disney World. The CM's love it when you make your own costume and it's something from an attraction or show of theirs. - ecmickey

Or else wait until mid-September. Party City will send you a mini catalog filled with hundreds of ideas. Done.

Pick your favorite character and assemble it yourself. I was in MK last year on Halloween, and while we did not stay for the party, we left the park as many folks were coming in and it was a BLAST seeing all of the costumes.
My favorite hands down was the family that dressed up as all the Monsters Inc. characters. They were all homemade and AWESOME!

And what people tend to forget is that it doesn't have to be Disney-themed. Just don't wear a mask or carry a weapon and you should be OK. Actually, I have never dressed up for the Halloween party and I've never felt out of place. For Christmas, I wear my black "Bah Humbug" Santa hat and that's it. I love the comments I hear as I walk past, and every now and again someone will ask to take a picture with me. I'm sure it's deleted the minute they get home and dismissed with a "what were were thinking?" but it's still cool
Re: Costumes for Mickey’s not so scary
we love to dress up when we go.. the first year we were a bad version of cinderella and prince charming.. the costumes were called sinderella and prince alarming...lol
last year we were king henry and queen anne
this year its ariel and prince eric :)
i would just say no pirates!!!! pirates are very common.. and i hate blending in.. last year everyone was stoping us about our costumes and the princesses at the royal table dinner loved it and played along
Re: Costumes for Mickey’s not so scary
When my mother and her husband went a few years back, they got themselves some high end pirate costumes. Very Disney without being a "toon" and you can have a lot of fun with the theme in general.
Re: Costumes for Mickey’s not so scary
I'm thinking about going as a pirate this year (I want to get something for the Pirate Night on my cruise, and this way I can get another night out of it).
