Visits to Disney:
February 2009: off-site 1 day trip to Epcot and Magic Kingdom
February 2010: All Star Movies 7 days, 6 nights of magic
February 2011: All Star Music 7 days, 6 nights of magic
September 2012: All Star Movies4 days, 3 nights of magic
Average I gather is about $2/3 per person.
When we visit we normally there two to three weeks so need the room keeping in tip top form so on first morning I always leave $10 and then $ 3/4 a day with a bigger top if we leave lots of rubbish like large water containers or pizza boxes etc. On last day always leaving a bigger tip. Also to ensure housekeeping knows the tip is for them I always leave it in an envelope with For Housekeeping on.... had a few maids not take cash before.
we left about $2 a day last year in a decorated envelope and a few extra dollars at the last day

It may not be "expected", but it certainly is a nice gesture for the people working so hard without much thanks in a behind-the-scenes job.
It's best to tip at least a little bit each day, rather than a larger lump sum at the end of your trip, just in case the same person hasn't been cleaning your room every day.
Good advice.
I generally leave $5 a day. Often the last day is a different housekeeper.
I had one housekeeper not take it one day. I put in an envelope marked housekeeping and tape it on mirror. So the next day I added the next envelope and dated each. They were both gone that day.
If I have my act together I put $5 in each envelope before I leave home, hate not having the right bills when I need them in the room. When we are leaving home I try to have a stash of $1 and $5 bills for taxi, sky cap, ME, Bellhop etc.
Some people are like Slinkies.
They aren't really good for anything,
but they still bring a smile to my face when I push them down a flight of stairs.
Friends are Gods way of apologizing to us for our families.
Thanks for the replies. My daughter is leaving tomorrow to do college internship as a Mousekeeper. I hope she runs into generous people like yourselves.

I read on another post that people do tip Magical Express bus drivers, but not the bus drivers that are on the Disney transport inside the property. Is this correct? Coming from a country where tipping is not the norm, it does make for a bit of confusionI guess it's probably outlined in places like the Unofficial Guide to WDW & AllEars but any quick hints would be welcome. Cheers!
Wow I feel horrible now... I rarely if ever tip Mousekeeping more than maybe $1 a day. We are the sort of family that rarely if ever carries cash... especially on vacation... so it's just hard. I once had this grand idea of creating little special envelopes for them and putting the cash in ahead of time but after a stay where we had a horrible mousekeeper, it killed the thought. Maybe next time...

Little tid bit; my daughter is mousekeeping at the Saratoga springs spa and resort, with the college intership program.

The kids on the college program are not union and even so, a buck or two per night goes along ways. Even the full time CP don't make alot of money for their great work.
