leaving the college program?

im interested in doing the college program in january. the only problem is that my brother is getting married and january and i am supposed to be in his wedding. does anyone know if they will let me leave for 2 days and come back?

I know someone who is in the college program right now and she is going to california for a couple days tomorrow.

It depends on the area and where you work. You have to put in your time off two weeks in advance. Then they will either approve or deny your request for time off. It depends on staffing, and how willing the management in your area is willing to work with you.

I don't know if you would have enough time. You have to request time off at least 2 weeks in advance. When is the wedding? You may be able to go down after the wedding is over.

When i was researching the program, i actually emailed and asked the program people this same question...

They said, usually it depends on the season.... SO if u plan to leave at a busy time and ur in a position that needs the workers... I dont think they will let you leave, BUT you never know.. The sooner u get your request in the better...

This is good stuff to consider. Personally, I'd love to be able to head home for a few days (not during the holidays), if it were possible... All the advice I've seen so far is, "Request it as early as possible", and then, "Don't expect it to work." Not fun, but hey, it's only 6 months, right?

Well, it really depends on the location/time of year/management. Usually during slower times you have a better chance to get several days off in a row. But again, there are no guarantees. It does help the chances though.

My big tip is get to be good friends with your managers off right away if you want extra time off. I helped my managers with anything they needed right away so when I asked for two weeks off in the summer during the busy season they were more than happy to let me. Also, I was the only CP for my custodian program to get Christmas day off due to the fact that my manager said I had worked hard so he would give it to me as a reward.

Dude... You shouldn't have posted that publicly... Now everyone will work triple as hard, making it all the harder to get to be good friends! Good tip. Networking is a powerful thing. (That brings up a question I've had about the opportunities possible to CPers for promotions and that type of thing, but I think that deserves a thread of it's own...)

I can speak to you about promotions right now. I actually got promoted while down there but was sworn to secrecy at the time. Part of it was due to the fact that I extended my program however and like I said earlier, I was always willing to do what the managers needed from me. If you love what you are doing, it really isn't work. I was a custodian but loved every second of it and honestly don't feel like it was a job, more of an experience.

I'm not afraid of work (I love it, actually), so this is very good to hear. I love working with people, and doing the job well... Which is why I love the idea of this program. Meeting/working with lots of people (all those guests! ) and making everyone's day as amazing as possible. What's the term? Personal magic generators? Something like that.

The easiest thing to do is just give away your shift...... there are so many eople there that are desperate for the days that they snitch it up almost instantly

This is something I will have to worry about as well. I will apply for the Fall 09, and I graduate in December. I am hoping they will let me come home for a weekend so I can walk with my class mates. We shall see! Thanks for all the great information.
