    What should I bring?

A stub for a list of things any prospective-CPer should bring/buy right off.

I've got a list going so far, but I'd love y'alls input. I'll save this post (I hope, if the forum works the way other forums do) for a "finalized" list, and we can discuss below.

So, I joined a Disney College Program and packed my suitcase, and in my suitcase I packed...

    Bringing
    • A router (if none of your roommates are bringing one)
    • Warm clothing (enough for a few days of cold weather, it does get cold)
    • Warm bedding (could be bought once in town, if you don't mind roughing it a few nights without bedding)
    • Mattress padding*
    • Dress clothes (polo shirts don't count, I hear, so bring a dress/button down shirt. A nice pair of slacks should do, I believe)
    • A bulletin/dry erase board*
    • Alarm clock*
    • A watch*
    • A lunchbag/box*
    • Laundry basket*
    • Personal trashcan, at least one per bedroom, and plastic grocery bags to line it with (I hear some apartments may have these in the bedrooms already)*
    • Lamp (the only lamp provided in the bedroom is the one on the ceiling. Bedside lamps would be a good idea)
    • Towel hanger for the bathroom
    Recurring purchases/cleaning supplies:
    • Dish soap and a sponge*
    • Laundry detergent*
    • Bleach (optional)*
    • Rubbing alcohol*
    • Paper towels (one person has mentioned that they make good/cheap plates)*
    • Toilet paper*
    • Garbage bags*
    * can be purchased once you arrive, but if you're driving and have room, bring it if you want.

    Do Not Bring
    • A ton of clothes
    • Shoes for work (buy them in town once you know what role you'll work)
    • Hangers, shampoo, etc., unless you are driving and have room
    Do Not Buy
    • Vacuum (apartment clubhouses loan these out, but hold your ID until you return them)
    • Mop (same as above)

Here are some things I recommend bringing/not bringing:
    Bringing
*a router (if you have one. If you don't, and your roomies don't, Walmart sells them cheap)
*warm weather clothing (FL can, and does, get cold during the winter)
*warm bedding (especially if you get cold easily- my roomies always loved blasting the AC)
*dress clothes (enough for Traditions, training, if you will be taking any classes, and if you think you will attend special events)
*a bulletin board (my roomies and I would write down our work schedules and stuff. It really helped. If you are flying, you could always get one at Walmart)
*a good alarm clock (you do NOT want to be late to work)
*a watch (its really useful for many roles)
*a lunchbag (it helps save money if you don't buy lunch every day)

    Do Not Bring
*a ton of clothes (you really don't need that many clothes. You are in costume for the majority of the time. And there are washing machines to wash the clothes you bring)
*shoes for work (I don't recommend buying work shoes ahead of time, unless you end up in one of a few roles. There are many styles/colors of shoes, so you never know what type you need until you know where you are working)
*Hangers, shampoo, ect (this stuff you can get at Walmart), unless you are driving and have room

If I can think of more, I will post them.

I love the router thing... As an Information Technology student, I just gotta say... Right on!

The bulletin board sounds really smart too.

Well, if you want internet throughout the apartment you will need a router. But chances are pretty good someone will bring one (we had 2 in my apartment last summer). But if not, they are pretty cheap at Walmart. That's what we did my first CP.

It really was! My roomie thought of it. So if I get accepted for Fall 09, I want to get a dry-erase board for writing stuff down (preferably a dry-erase calendar).

If you are a tech person I would say the router, but my apartment didn't have any internet access and honestly we never really needed it. I was there for a whole year and not once did I go online and it was a great eye opening experience to not rely on technology all the time. I also didn't have a cell phone at the time. But if you are a tech person, go for it!

Router, or better said, Wireless Access Point. (often one in the same in consumer packages found at Wal-Mart and such, so you're right, Joanna. )

EnvyPeterPan, could you elaborate on "not having internet"? By choice, or because the network did not extend to you? Also, I was under the impression that a majority of job scheduling (at least for overtime and pickup hours) was done through a casting portal website. Did you get by without using the portal?
I need internet to prevent the requirement of a long distance phone (plan), but other than that, I've been very much a hermit here... This program is my chance to step out and enjoy REAL people, not just virtual ones!

At least during my college program we didn't have internet access in the rooms. We could have added it if we wanted to, but we chose not to since we were mainly there to meet other people from around the world. As for the Portal, you can find that at Cast Member sections of the different parks. I got the majority of my overtime and schedules at the Mouseketeeria, which is the cafeteria in the tunnels beneath the Magic Kingdom. As for my roommates, I believe they all got their schedules the same way.

And you really should get to know real people instead of virtual ones! That was one of my favorite parts of the program. It's been five years but I still keep in close contact with people from Tennessee, California, Montana, Boston, Michigan, South Carolina, and many more places. It was frustrating returning to college afterwards due to the fact that all my friends from there just wanted to stick around and play video games all day or watch television. I can honestly say I didn't go online once the whole time I was there and only watched a little bit of television (mainly while getting ready for the day). Get to know people. That's my main tip to you!

I have to have internet while in FL. Besides needing it for school stuff, I also use it for keeping in touch with people. I can do without tv. But I need my internet. Plus, I like being able to get on the HUB at home.

I can see that. I am that way since leaving the program. Now I need the internet to keep in contact with all the great friends I made down there. I'm extremely exciting because we are having a very mini reunion in 30 days!

I knew saving that old wireless router we had was a good idea! I've already stashed it away for future use if (and when) I do the college program. I don't think I can last for more than 3 days tops without the internet. So, I'm assuming that you just need a broadband cable that you use to connect the broadband modem socket in the wall to your router, right? As long as you use a laptop with some sort of built-in wireless card, I shouldn't have to use the one that came with the router I think.

The router is definetly a good idea because otherwise you find four or five people crowding in one corner for the internet. You definietly want to bring (or buy at walmart) padding for the matress because it is so rediculouly uncomfortable.

LOL We definitely had dial-up when I did my program. Spring Advantage 2003! Woot!

Also, shout-out to goodguy for being an IT major. Thats what I got my degree in as well.

If I could add something to your TO BRING list, it would be a car. They provide transportation which is really nice but its so much better having the freedom of your own transport. I rode the bus my first couple of weeks there in an effort to save gas, but after that I decided Id much rather take my own car.

Ouch... Dial-up?! Well, I guess if you're mainly doing email and such, but... Yeah, wow...

InfoTech's cool/fun. I took a MS Windows 2K3 Admin/Manage test yesterday (passed) that was actually FUN! No one at my school has described it like that.

Yeah, a car would be great, but I sure hope it's not too bad to be without one. As I said on another site, the only way I'd get a car by the start of the program is if it dropped into my lap... In which case I'd probably be in the hospital, not able to go to do the program.
