Accident on Kali River Rapids in DAK

A little scary, but hopefully everyone is feeling fine by now. I'd hate to think of anyone having their vacation at WDW ruined by an accident.

I was listening to the Today show while working this morning and they mentioned some sensors malfunctioned. That was really all that was said.

The injured people had better get a refund or something for that.

I'm assuming Kali River will be open again asap. my parents called and told me that "a ride is closing down at Disney World because of an accident." that had be very worried (I immediately thought, "Mission Space!") that a ride or attraction would be going away forever. anyone know the status on the ride?

oh yeah, and I also hope those people are all good, feel better, enjoy their time at WDW, etc.

but really, what about the ride?

update: The reason the ride stopped in the first place was a computer glitch involving a sensor which automatically stopped the ride and drained the water. This had nothing to do with the evacuation platform. As far as the cast goes that was involved, the one who was taken to the hospital dislocated his shoulder and is waiting to find out if he has a fracture near his elbow. Another cast member didn't go to the hospital, but has been examined by disney doctors and has a strained shoulder muscle. Both are recovering in different areas of the park on "modified duty". No guests sustained any breaks or concussions. Feel free to ask me anyhting about the incident... I would rather you know the thruth than try to sort through the rumors.

Ummm...okay. There've been some drastically differing stories, can you explain what exactly happened? Did "boats" slide back down a hill? You're sure the river didn't turn red?

When I hear about theme park accidents, my first reaction is always: must have been a shadowy operation. The kind of rides for which the operators deserve the designee "carnies" -- the ones who pack up and disappear after a wild long weekend of cotton candy, elephant ears and brightly-colored rolls of tickets. No, boats didn't slide... next to the ramp that the boats go up there is a ramp with handrails that people can walk on... this ramp is about three feet lower than the rafts that are going up the hill. There is a platform that is designed to roll up the rails of the ramp that people walk on. The platform locks into holes along the rails. The platform takes two cms to move, one pulling and one pushing, both of those cast members while pushing or pulling have to be squeezing a lever at the same time inorder to move the platform. If one cast member lets go of the lever the locking pins are released and the platform will catch on the closest hole (the holes are about in inch apart). There is then a latter that comes down from the platform to the ramp so people can easily walk away with no climbing. On Tuesday the highest raft had already been evacuated and the next raft was about half way empty when the locks gave way and the platforrm slid the rest of the way (from about half way up the ramp) down the rails. Due to the weight of the platform it gained speed very quickly, overtaking those trying to run from it. Three people were on top of the platform that got thrown form it at the bottom. No one went into the river, and all bleeding was quickly contained thanks to the help of a nurse in one of the rafts still waiting to get evacuated. 911 calls went out before the platform even reached the bottom thanks to quick responses by cms that saw the incident from the control tower.
