Disney-MGM Studios name change in 2008

Disney-MGM Studios name will officially change to Disney's Hollywood Studios effective January of 2008.

The new name sounds like it will probably give Disney more leeway for future theming - not being tied in to another company like MGM or Pixar!?

The theme park execs feel that this title more closely relates to what the park has to offer. It's not being tied to another company.

my family will still probably call it MGM though. o well. at least it isnt Pixar.

I'm also glad they didn't change the name to include Pixar. If they needed to change the name, then I think they made a good choice. I also think my family will still be calling it MGM for quite a while.

So-long, Disney-MGM Studios. In a widely anticipated move, Walt Disney World is renaming its movies-oriented theme park, dropping the "MGM" name from the brand. But unlike much of what has been anticipated in Disney-gossip circles, the new name will contain neither Pixar nor ABC.

Disney's Hollywood Studios will debut in January, Disney World officials announced today.

I like it. At least now the rumors are over about what it will be called. Kinda glad Pixar isn't in the name.

I will still be calling it MGM for years to come. I'm glad it's not Disney-Pixar, but I would rather it be easier to say than Disney's Hollywood Studios. I wish they would just call it Disney Studios.

so, is MGM not going to be involved anymore?

I, personally, really liked the aura of "classic Hollywood" that the park useta have, and that the brand of MGM lends itself to.

I figured something like this was coming because in this year's (2007) planning DVD they refer to it only as "Disney Studios," and I think that the 2007 Unofficial Guide did the same thing.

I was playing some WDW Racing game the other day and noticed that they referred to the park as "Disney Studios" and this game came out in 2000!

This comes up all the time - it has to do with how Disney licensed the MGM name: it was only for specific uses, and it didn't include TV, video, DVD, or the like. You'll find that on all the videos it is Disney Studios.
