With survelance technology as good as it is, and with Disney spending more money than most on survelance, I imagine that more of these people are actually caught than in the old days. Thank goodness!

My kids are too little to be alone anywhere, but I wonder what will be out there when I finally face the question, "Mom, can we go..."

Re: The Pervs are loose in the World again

This is disgusting. You'd think when you went to Disney World you could just escape all this bad news and just have an amazing time. apparently not... It is truly sad. I was no more than 13 when i went from the front gate of the magic kingdom to Pirates and rode it one last time. I'll think about that again before I do it next time...I hope it is a VERY long time before we hear any news like this coming from the world.
The Golden age never was the present age… but with human liberty we can fulfill the promise and meaning of America. To everyone a chance. To all people, regardless of their birth the right to live, to work, to be themselves, and to become whatever their visions can combine to make them. This is the promise of America...And I foresee the American adventure to continue for a long, long time!

You can't let your guard down just because you like the place where you are. "Magical" thinking is not conducive to safety. Disney is not immune to sickos and I doubt it ever was. If anything, I'll bet WDW was better at hushing things up in the past to avoid bad publicity. We are just prone to hearing more bad things thanks to the internet, cell phones, cable-tv, etc. Unfortunately you can go on vacation but you can't expect to completely escape from potential harm. Just use a little common sense and you'll be way ahead of most people.

Seems to me the best thing would be if WDW had access to registered offenders fingerprints then they wouldn't get through the turnstiles and into the parks

That's an excellent idea! But I bet if Disney tried it the ACLU would file a lawsuit to protect the pedo's "rights".

You are right even though they shouldn't have rights. The other problem is that there are some offenders that aren't in the system, they wouldn't have records of their crimes. It's sad but there is no way to stop these animals. Parents need to be more active and protect their children.

While I wholly agree that adults who actively prey on children for their own "jollies" should have extremely limited or no rights. There are people who are on those lists who don't fall in those categories.

In every state I've lived in if you were an 18 y/o boy who made the poor choice of having "relations" with your girlfriend who is considered under the age of consent for your state and the parents press charges, you get to stay on a registered *** offender list for the rest of your life (I actually have a friend in High School this happened to. He was a senior she was a Freshman).

If you are one of those teens who for some reason feels compelled to sext your boyfriend/girlfriend with lewd pictures (ala Vanessa Hudgens of HSM fame), the news is starting to report that they are getting tried on Child Porn charges and being put on sexual predator registries.

The laws don't keep up with the times. Laws that were meant to protect children from adult predators are sometimes and many times catching kids who are being stupid.

I know true sexual predators have been around for a long time because I remember my parents telling me when I was little in the 1970's to avoid certain houses because they have gotten in trouble with the law for doing not-so-nice things to kids. My parents never went into details but we avoided their houses and when they tried to talk to us we just "smiled and waved" and kept on walking.

Before you think I'm soft on these people. I'm not. I think people who are true predators. People who have something just not wired right to fit within normal behaviors in that realm shouldn't ever see the light of day. I'm in the camp that firmly believes these are mindsets that cannot be rehabilitated away. It's like an addiction where you have to trust and hope that the afflicted individual has the willpower to stop doing the behavior. Not a risk I'm willing to take.

Those are good points. I never thought of some of the scenarios you brought up, but, I still feel they are too easy on bonafide perverts in some places. New Hampshire immediately springs to mind.

I agree and I'd have to say the scenerios that I listed are probably rare in comparison to the number of legitimate entries on those registries.

But, there is a problem with making it hard on the legitimate offenders. Even people who commit the most heinous of crimes to adults and serve their time are allowed to walk around with little or no knowledge of what they've done (as long as the stay out of trouble). In order to get tough on those kind of criminals you'd have to get tough on all criminals of a certain calibre (where do you draw the line). But, what constitutes tough? Ship them off to some island we purchase? Set up communities where only they can live and work? What?

This is purely my personal opinion but I believe the United State's judicial system's philosophy is that they'd rather let 99 guilty people go than execute/incarcerate 1 innocent person. When I lived in South East Asia their philosophy seemed to be they'd rather execute/incarcerate 99 innocent people rather than let one guilty person go (emphasis on execute). But most people in the US feel those countries are short on respect for human rights.

For every step you take toward restricting the rights on criminals after they are released from jail you are moving one step closer to that other extreme and that gets a lot of people nervous.

If you took those registered offenders ability to move around away from them, you pretty much eliminate their ability to work which then makes them wards of the state (welfare) which is worse because now we, the tax payers are supporting them. So, what is left? If you want them to stay away from everyone, but don't want to pay for their room and board, there only leaves execution....slippery slope, I guess. But for me, the decision isn't hard but my opinions on these types of matters usually get A LOT of people mad at me (I tend to lean more toward the S. East Asian view of criminal justice)

Here is an update on a few of these cases. The headline makes me sick.
