    Re: Ban Duffy the Bear

I have not taken your post as anti-Disney. We tend to drift a tad from topics and we are a passionate group. Welcome to our little family. Weeks ago I posted on a general thread that I was dumbfounded by the Disney steam behind the Duf. I am curious as to how many Disney folk like "us" fall for the Duffy. To early to tell. I just know it won't be me.

I bought dozens of plush toys for my kids when they were small, my home could have been mistaken for a Disney Store. Duffy just seems so detached.

My gut is Disney is still grasping at straws to fill the Harry Potter void, anything they can do quickly and cheaply that will rake in money.
I wasn't a big fan of Disney's Big announcement tease either, nor am I drawn to looking at strangers vacation pictures flashing about. Nor was I interested in the FL makeover, Princess ad nauseum. Thank goodness Disney seems to have lost steam on that version of FL makeover.

Disney fired so many talented people who knew how to hit the mark to save a buck and they did. Now lets see if the newbie Higher Ups at Disney can sway the Disney Fans to love Duffy the way the guests overseas do. Time will tell. I'm doubtful.

Duffy is a purely commercial product: no soul, no creativity, no character, no personality, no purpose other than making money. It's even worse that Disney is trading on Mickey and Minnie to prop up this straw bear. Disney merchandising hits a new low.

Duffy should go back to selling fabric softener.

I've got nothing against Duffy, or Figment, or any of the other characters. My kids are older now and will not want photos with Duffy, but if someone else likes him, that's fine too.

See, thats exactly my point. Duffy has no creativity. He is merely there for money. Yes, I know he'll be extinct (no pun intended) in a couple years and if Disney relly wants this to stick around, send it to Japan. They love this sort of thing. Leave the U.S. out of it.

    Re: Ban Duffy the Bear

Duffy first appeared at WDW in 2004 at DTD (Once Upon A Toy). He has had a huge following for years in Japan. He has his own photo spots at DisneySea. Surprised it took this long for him to get a spot in the parks here. He is just a lovable teddy bear. Sometimes there is way too much story behind new characters (a new princess every year!?). I like how they kept it simple and relaxing with Duffy.

I am with you -- He came once - without huge success -- went to Japan and they fell in love. Why not give it another shot here? I don't think it's brainless -- not all charecters have to have a story, or a movie, to make them enjoyable.

Your passionate hate for this stuffed animal is definitely obvious. Soooooo... Walk by him. Don't stop and ask for a picture. Don't buy a teddy bear.

But, a little advice, I have volunteered my time as an activist for many caused for many years - protests, petitions, letters to congress, phone calls, marches, polling in the pouring rain -- the list goes on... Creating a petition to bring down a stuffed animal at Disney, frankly, seems a little silly. I'm all for telling public companys that their consumers are not happy -- but I would suggest a letter... Even the Mr. Toads Wild Ride Guy had nationwide publicity... and well we all know what happened to the ride...

i agree here... a petition really is going to go nowhere... Disney is gonna do what it wants and you know if it sells then... it will stay... if your not a fan and against it your best course of action is to again walk by it ad not spend the money... if it is unsuccessful it will go away...

    Re: Ban Duffy the Bear

Duffy is a HUGE hit in Japan...specifically at Tokyo Disney Sea.

    From the OC Register

In Japan, Duffy, who is Mickey Mouse’s toy bear, rivals his owner as the most popular Disney character. Visitors line up for hours to meet Duffy at the Tokyo DisneySea park and see a Duffy stage show. Fans take their stuffed bears on their travels, much like the Flat Stanley book character.

    Re: Ban Duffy the Bear

I want to firstly re-iterate that I am neutral with regards to this bear (frankly I don't care either way), but remember that there are precious few Japanese pop-culture phenomenons that have successfully translated to a Western market. Just because something is popular in Japan does not mean that it have a repeat performance in the US and elsewhere.

    Let's just wait and see.

I was on the WDW News sight and tripped upon some photo's of Duffy at Epcot. Kinda showing we here in America are not quite at the level of Japan. Doesn't look like guests are lining up for hours nor do they seem to be leaving with arm loads of Duffy Merchandise.
