Disney owns property in Virginia? Is this true?

I had heard they sold the property, can anyone confirm?

I never heard of that, they kept it just in case they found a use for it but they might of sold it.

Oh ok, I didn't know exactly where the property was. A park or DVC would have been great for my family, because we go to Washington (Alexandria) quite often because I have an uncle that lives there.

I know - this would have put a park within an hour or so of my home. I would have been there all the time!

Why would anyone be against a Disney park in their area?

Opponents had a huge beef with Disney being right next door to the Manassas Civil War historic area. That's why it got nixed. Interestingly enough, I can remember doing news stories before the whole Northern Virginia part broke out about a rumor that Disney was purchasing land near the intersection of interstates 81 and 77 near Wytheville. This is in southwest Virginia, where land is plentiful and lots of room to grow. It just sort of died away, but I never heard anything else about it. Of course the climate in this part of Virginia is nowhere near to Florida. It can get plenty cold here and does snow a decent amount.

Now a GREAT place I WISH Disney would get involved is here in Roanoke at the very recently closed Explore Park right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Talk about a perfect place for a smaller frontier-related theme park. The Roanoke River runs right by the place and it is in the heart of the Blue Ridge. There is a guy working to do something wth the area, but he says Disney isn't involved. Too many people around here are more concerned with keeping the scenery instead of taking advantage of a gold-plated platinum opportunity studded with diamonds.

If memory serves me correctly, Disney really never bought most of the land. They had options on it but never executed them due to the opposition that developed. It wouldn't make sense for them to have held onto land (and paid taxes on it) in an area where they weren't wanted. Like all major corporations they have limited capital and any invested capital has to be providing income

They would have made $$$$ if they'd actually bought the land just on resale. The property values in that area exploded.
