I have never heard of this so I don't know if it is true or not.
Just got back from my trip to WDW on the 22nd, and the CMs on the Yuletide tour said that Disney will be removing the hat in about 6 months because another guest asked about it. Management announced it last week on their computer portal. The studios will go back to the Chinese theater as the icon.

It'd be nice, but I won't be holding my breath. I've always been found of the Earful Tower as the park icon.

I'd be pretty skeptical about this one. Disney has put a lot of effort and money into branding the hat as the studios icon. Changing now would be very radical and REALLY expensive. Changing an icon for something this big takes years and years to do and hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars. Think of all the merchandising that has to be updated, something they're doing already with the new name -- with the hat still there. The hat is still displayed very prominently on the official Web site, which was just recently redesigned, again because of the name change. If Disney was going to do something so large as change out the icon, don't you think they'd do it with a new name all at once?
Personally, I like the hat. I think it's better than the theatre. The chinese theatre isn't a Disney signature image - it's a image of Hollywood. Yes, I know it's the Disney Hollywood Studios, and it's fine to be in the park, but not as the icon. The hat, on the other hand, is a signature image from Fantasia, one of Walt's most beloved films. He had a passion for Fantasia beyond even that of Snow White. When you think of Mickey Mouse, the Sorcerer's Apprentice is one of the first images that comes to mind. It is, therefore, very fitting that the hat is the icon for a park devoted to Hollywood -- Disney style.

i would be really happy if that hat came down...i get the image and that it really is a disney icon but it blocks the view...i was never a big fan.

When I grow up I wanna be a Disney
I like the hat for the same reason that clion said, its more a disney themed icon. With the name change to being the Disney Studios I think it is for fiting to have a Disney related icon, which is what the hat is. The theater is a hollywood icon, but its Disney's park so the icon should be focused on that. Also it does not make sense with the amount of effort put in to make the hat the icon, as also was stated earlier.
I hope they get rid of the hat, I never liked it, but I won't be holding my breath.
The hat is OK, but it is in the wrong spot. Maybe they will move it and restore the traditional view.

I am not a fan of the hat however, I am incredibly skeptical about it coming down. It's long been known that the people who own the real Grauman's Chinese Theater had big issues with Disney using it as the icon for one of their parks. There were battles over it that ultimately led to the hat going up in the first place. Now, with the recent change to Hollywood Studios and the unbranding of the MGM name, I suppose anything is possible and all things are back on the table... but I don't know, I'll just believe it when I see it.
Sometimes all you need is a reminder that out there lies a better place... a better world... a Walt Disney World.

The hat has kinda grown on me over the last couple of years. I wouldn't mind seeing it moved though.
