New Carousel of Progress Rumor

While in line for SSE this past weekend, I overheard some people talking that next year they are dismantling the COP and moving it to the Smithsonian. The guy who said it claimed to be a cast member.
Anyone else heard this and how do you feel about it? I'd be sad to see it go, but if it were at the Smithsonian I'd feel like they'd take care of it.

I dont want to diminish the rumor but I believe this has been a long talked about rumor. I guess until it actually happens I will still be skeptical. I guess part of me does not want to believe it because I love that attraction.

This has been a long time rumor...But I am still suspicious of "talk in a queue line" even from a CM (having been a CM, I know they are just as susceptible to the fallacies of the rumor mill as the rest of us).

But is a nice touch that at least it would be taken care of.

I don't really believe they are going to move it to the Smithsonian or any where else for that matter.

I hope not (I'm extremely skeptical). The Smithsonian is HIGHLY overrated. It has gotten to the point, that we don't even go to them anymore when we go to D.C.. Then again, if they did move it to, say like the American History Museum which does/did have a Disney Parks display, that might give us a reason to go back.

Ok, I admit! I'm guilty of starting false rumors while waiting in queue to drive people crazy. I've convinced several people that they're going remove It's a Small World with a thrilling coaster through all the different cultures with updated singing dolls, hehehe :P

I would hate to see that attraction go. It is one of my all time favorites and I would be crushed if it was taken away. I had a hard time accepting the fact that Delta Dreamflight was taken away. That was another ride that I just loved to death.

I would also be extremely disappointed if they removed Carousel of Progress but it never has a line -- is it popular with anyone but die-hard Disney fans?

So how much land does the CoP have completely around it, including behind? I don't have Virtual Earth on this computer. Does anyone out there? My only thought is if there is enough land 360 there might be a master plan. I love CoP, I'd be sad

I actually got to see whats behind the COP once. We were on the ride and got to the third scene or so and it broke down. Apparently they couldn't fix it and we had to evacuate the ride. We walked out on the backside and a cast member had to lead us back to the front. I wasn't really paying attention to how much room was back there, but it looked like they had some sort of boneyard/storage or something of that nature. There was a bunch of junk back there and my mother and I were pretty sure we saw one of the old Star Jets hidden back there.

I was surprised to see that the CoP was as large as it is, don't really take that in entering the ride. Can't wrap my brain around how they could get that in the
Smithsonian Museum, tad big.

The way our government works, they would probably just build another museum (currently they're are 18 as there is)

I hope this rumor is not true. While I do enjoy new rides, I hate when they get rid of the old ones. Disney has plenty of room to keep both old and new
