2007/2008, a replacement system along the lines of DL's 50th anniversary castle projection system is planning to be installed.
My take: The wand was always a bit controversial - Disney knows this. The original lighting systems that provided the color-changing and laser-covered spaceship earth are still mounted atop the Universe of Energy and Living Seas, just unused because with the wand in the way they can't balance the light properly. The new system lets them remove the wand while plussing the sphere - without ever admitting the wand was a bit of a mistake.

Yeah - I knew they were planning on taking it down in a couple of years - but the rumor states that it looks like it might be coming down earlier than expected... I wonder if that is true - I have never been a fan of it, and wouldn't mind seeing it go.

A note.. the asymetrical form makes SE more photogenic overall than jsut the sphere alone, atleast from an artistic standpoint. A lot of times the sphere looks like a white blob in the background..

I was never a big fan of the wand, the 2000, the Epcot - none of it, really. I think it took away from not only SSE, but all of FW. See ya, Mickey!

It was a nice thought and if it had to go up, should have only been up for the Y2K party. I would help take it down and store Mickey and his wand at my house. Should make it easier for the family to find the place when they visit.

alrighty - I happen to like the hat at MGM - I just wish it wasnt in from of Mann's Chinese...
But mind you I also liked the birthday cake...

I too kinda liked the Cakestle at the time 
But now when I see pictures of it I cringe. I really dislike the hat, so much so that I did not buy ANY of the 100 years of Magic stuff! and I usually buy hats and tees for every park.
Now for The wand, it was okay when they had the year 2000, but I absolutely hate the font they chose for "Epcot" and will not be sad to see it go. A good place for it I think is by the entry plaza
