Life without Pixar... Life with out Disney...

So, how will each of these companies do without the other one? I feel confident that Pixar's name is strong enough now that they could make lots of money and great movies with any distribution partner. And I feel that Disney is strong enough to continue on their own... but them giving up 2D to concentrate on 3D may be a mistake IMO.

Now Disney, with their 1st 3D movie (Chicken Little) will set the tone for things to come. If it flies -- it will create a nice little competition between the two companies. and I think that will be the best for animation overall.

But please, bring back classic 2D animation to WDFA!

    What do you think?

I think the loss of the Pixar juggernaut may sound the death knell for Uncle Michael.

I think I saw Roy doing cartwheels when the Press Releases came out.

Is there any word on what will happen to the movie "Cars" that Pixar is making. The car that Kyle Petty and Paul Newman were driving in the Daytona 24 had the sponser listed as - Disney presents a Pixar film Cars. I can't find anything on the net about the movie.

Todd -- Cars is still going to be made... it is covered under the existing contract, which includes two more movies - The Incredibles and Cars.

Adam - I got to agree with you on the 2-D Animation - I think it will be awful if they take it away forever... I have no facts to back me up - or articles I have read or anything like that - I just dont want to see it go - I love the old and new classics...

I also think that they need some more animated musicals (I know - me and musicals...) but here is the deal - there Broadway shows are doing amazing (to the point of Disney releasing Beauty and the Beast and AIDA for public liscensing--- that is huge in the theatre world by the way) so if there BWays are doing well - why not experiment more with animated and non-animated musicals -- they are making quite a comeback on film!

    okay I am done

The problem with the hand-drawn animation is not necesarily the quality of the art itself, but the quality of the stories. Unfortunately, films like "Treasure Planet" "brother Bear" and some of the other films since 1999 have, well... not been very good stories that bring people into the theaters (i had no desire to see a kid turn into a bear). But films like Aladdin, Mermaid, Lion King... those are the types of modern DIsney Classics that they need to go back to making.

I'll step off my soapbox and turn this over to someone else.

    Ace...

I agree 2D animation is not a problem. The real problem is the story, as you mentioned. (even though I really liked Brother Bear)

    [soapbox]

but... what is making the stories go downhill lately? My take: Budget and time. Corporate is not allowing the creative team to do their job the way it should be done. Fear of being laid off, fear of going over budget, and fear of missing a deadline drive the creative team to take shortcuts, which in turn gives us an inferior product.

Then... take the closing of WDFA-F... this outfit turned out three hits in a row (Brother Bear, Mulan and ..... ) and what does corporate do... shut them down to 'bring it under one house' in California. Of course, that sounds reasonable... but... California does not have the recent track record of Florida... California animation costs more due to higher salaries, higher cost of the land/building etc. So, why not reward the hot team and collapse the burbank crowd to the Florida campus?

I dont know... and I may have gotten a bit off track. But my point is, Corporate is not allowing Creative to do their work to the best of their ability.

Lets hope that the concentration of the creative talent in California will be a good move and that the next few years will be good for Disney Feature Animation. But please, bring back 2D!
