Who is the Modern Day Casey???

First off, thanks Lou for that terrific Casey segment and thanks for embedding the video in the show notes. It took me back to my childhood and I love the characterization of the Umpire.

While watching the video, I couldn't help thinking who in the major leagues is the modern day Casey. Appearance and behavior-wise, Pat Burrell kept entering my mind for some reason. Performance-wise, it's hard to not pile on Alex Rodriguez. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts.

I agree with Derek Jeter and even Chipper Jones; both great guys and amazing ball players. I just have one question, do you mean a "Casey" as in a great ball player or kind of how in the show (my memory may be off and I haven't had time to watch the video on the site-it's running very slow) the Mighty Casey strikes out when his team needs him the most??
If the latter is the case then I definitely wouldn't pick Jeter or even Jones, and I could see then why it would be easy to pick on A-Rod. I still stand by my Yanks no matter what!!!

Yeah - I was more referring to how Casey is portrayed in the cartoon.

Ok well in that case yes the name Arod does jump out but I don't want to pick on him too much cuz he gets enough of it from the media, but my vote would be for Jason Giambi; the guy can never hit when it really counts. I kinda also might even put Nomar Garciapara (not too sure if I spelled his last name correct) in this "Casey character" for baseball. He needs to step up his game more now, he used to be great but he really has slacked off recently. That's just my votes for the "Caseys" in the league right now.

Giambi is a great call...he fits the "Casey" caricature perfectly.

Yeah, I'm glad a lot of you agree with me on that. Whenever I watch a game on tv or go to The Stadium I always think he looks exactly like Casey; and then when he strikes out or pops to the second baseman with a runner on third I swear he's Casey!! If I had to remake that cartoon with real life people he would be the Casey that I pick out just by the way he looks!!

    Casey

I'm not sure who i would pic for the Casey but you have to remember that in the cartoon Casey had a kind of attitude maybe kind of Barry Bondish like Attitude you know the i'm the best and you all know it, but he was probably a nice guy because the crowd loved him, well, kind of the way San Fran fans loved Barry i'm not a Barry fan or a Giant fan but that is who i think would most resemble him.(steroid issue aside of course)
    GO DODGERS!!!!!!
