Is a WDW trip in late September a bad idea?

I am planning a trip for me and my 6 year old daughter for the weekend of September 22-26th, 2011. It's a great time for us to travel since the crowds are light then and we can get a great deal on an on-property room.

My question is, is the risk of bad weather enough to deter us from going this time of year? I can deal with rain and heat and humidity, but what about hurricanes? I know it's a **** shoot, and I don't mean to sound wimpy, but would it be a better bet for us to delay a few weekends?

    Opinions are most welcome, thanks!

Hurricanes are hit or miss.....the heat and crowds of summer are guaranteed!!! I would say go for it!! We were in Orlando for a hurricane a few years ago - the parks closed early and it rained terrible for a few hours then the sun came out and rest of the week was wonderful.

We would always do September or October for our family trips. It is still hot and humid however September wait times for the most part are low so it isn't as miserable as the summer.

We always purchased trip insurance with interruption included. That will cover the hurricane threat, emergency or an illness. We were in FL one fall when a big hurricane hit FL. We didn't even get much rain in WDW while the rest of FL was getting pounded.

I once went in very early October and had a great time. Waits longer than 20 minutes were rare; weather much more bearable; no Brazillian tour groups; comparatively empty parks. I was getting off Pirates / Mansion and just going straight back in. One visit during the off-season and you'll never want to go in summer again.

Went in 2009 from September 18th to the 26th. I have never seen the parks that empty. I have never been able to get so much done in a trip. It is a wonderful time to go, just be prepared for the heat.

Went early September 2 years ago. Was still hot, which I like, and the crowds were not too bad. I'd do it again.

We love Sept, however we now always go in may.......one reason-
Hurricanes, the last few times we went....they hit and ruined a couple of days, so...we now choose may.
Sept is great...if the cane doesn't come.

I usually can't go then because I am a teacher, but one year I took my personal days and my husband and I went. It was fantastic. The weather was still warm, but tolerable and the crowds were very low.

I'm going 8/28-9/2. I hope no hurricanes hit...crossing fingers mainly because that is a good time for us and the crowds will be low.

Have always gone in March and it's been pretty crowded, so this will be interesting.

How many times has WDW actually been shut down due to hurricanes? If a hurricane hits Southern Florida in the time period you are going Orlando itself might just get some bad rain, and it gets that every July and August anyway.

Re: Is a WDW trip in late September a bad idea?

We usually go in late-January, which is marvelously uncrowded. We've become so spoiled that I hate to go during a more crowded time. I will NOT be used to the heat, but we can handle that, for sure.
