Monorail ?'s

I have been on the monorail during WDW's legendary summer thunderstorms, but have always been at the T&TC or in the Contemporary to wait it out. My question is do they stop the monorails on the beams during storms, or do they head to the nearest station?

Next question: I know there is an emergency hatch in the new cars, but I am deathly afraid of heights, I think I would be more afraid to climb on top of the car then stay inside. Are there handrails or something on top to get from car to car, or do you just get up there to pray?

I have also been on monorails that remained in the stations during bad storms, and also have stopped on a track during severe weather. Not sure if it was because it was unsafe to continue, of a train in a station ahead was blocking traffic, etc. I also know that my singing on the monorails has brought them to a complete halt as well.

As for the hatch atop the cars, I would doubt that they would be used by guests except in the most of extreme emergencies (e.g. monorail driver hears Lou singing, gins the train, it flipps off track, and lands on its side near the GF beach) :D

Are you a basso profundo or mezzo soprano (pun)?

Living in Florida, Storms are almost an everyday thing. At Disney, unless the conditions are Hurricane Strength (not trying to make fun of current stuations), or there is a warning about tornadoes (extreme weather), the monorails should be running as normal. I have notices though, they wont let you sit in the front cab.

Summer... just hoping that Ivan stays far far away (for my personal benefit, as well as for the state's residents and guests!).

Hoping to let my daughter (OK, me) still ride in the front cab when I get there! :yes:

Ivans not lookin hopeful, BUT it is supposed to stay away from WDW (unlike Charlie and Frances) I got pretty lucky with damage. I didnt have much. Answering your comment. You should be able to. Ivan is not supposed to hit until Monday.

NEW UPDATE....IVAN! Supposed to hit Tuesday, Go staright through the center of the state. NOT GOOD!!!

oh please.....I just checked the map and, yes, Florida is in the area where Ivan might strike but as of this moment they aren't sure. It doesn't hurt to be prepared, but on the other hand let's not evacuate now (unless you're in the FL Keys where they are already preparing evacuations.)

with our luck!!! If you talk to the right people, they tell you it doesn't look good for FLORIDA. The high pressure system in the Atlantic isn't supposed to move... BAD. and the ridge moving south...BAD. From experience in years past and NWS telling me things. IT DOESN"T LOOK GOOD. (gosh do i hope i'm wrong) But, BAD is the word for now

Oh I remember beingon a monorail once when it was in a thunderstorm. I was on the old orange monorail (old model) while it was first rainning and we pulled out of the MK station and just passed the switch track to the Contemp. A squall line came through and it was pounding us bad. We had to sit at a stop on the beam wind blowing us like it was going to toss us. After it passed 10 minutes later we pulled into the contemp. station. Now I talked to an operator that was running monorail yellow a little over a year ago when she got caught on the beam and got hit twice by lightning and it killed the monorail it got pelted by hail that broke the front windshield and beat up the train bad. they limped into the POLY. and a tractor towed them off the track.

On 12-07 or 12-08 we figured we'd take a ride around for a good video and audio shoot. We approached the Poly station to find everyone turning around saying theres a broken down Monorail. The CM said it'd be an "unknown time" to get through as it was blocking other monorails. We decided to wait and lo and behold w/in 2 inutes here comes one! We even got so lucky to be co-pilots...for the second time this trip!! It was about 6 at night or so by the way. The operator said they were very busy as RED broke down on the Epcot line. We heard the radio traffic in the cab and it sounded like a electrical problem. A major electrical problem. After our round trip, we sprinted to the car and headed out to the Epcot line and saw the "tow tractor" pulling RED at mid parking lot area towards TTC. I tooks some stills, but they didnt come out. I did a "video" with my camera and that kinda came out. It was cool to see, but unfourtunate for the Epcoteeers coming back ( now that i think of it, it was about 8 30 or 9 oclock) Bad timing for a breakdown. Look for my trip report soon and the video.
