Being a twenty-something living in New York City, I love to spend time exploring Manhattan and indulging (responsibly!) in the wonderful nightlife it has to offer. While I love to try new and exciting drinks when I am out, I do find myself to be somewhat of a creature of habit and sticking with my favorite drinks quite often. I have found this to be true in Walt Disney World as well! I enjoy trying new drinks every time I visit the World, but there are several drinks that are my favorites and that I find myself indulging in on almost every trip. I thought it would be fun to include my list of favorite drinks in WDW in a post here and to receive some feedback in the comments below on what your favorite Disney drinks are! I will actually be in WDW as you are reading this, so any suggestions can be sampled on the spot!

So here is the list of my favorite drinks in WDW!

Lapu Lapu – Taking the number one spot is my favorite drink which can be found at Kona Café at the Polynesian Resort. While it is a little pricy at around $13, this drink is strong, presented in a fabulous way, and tastes amazing! The Lapu Lapu features Meyer’s original dark rum and tropical fruit juices served in a fresh pineapple and topped with Bacardi 151. I fist tried this drink several trips ago after being enthralled by a picture I found of it online. While I usually dislike pineapple and rum, I decided to at least try the drink and was more than pleasantly surprised! Plus, I can’t get enough of the presentation in a fresh pineapple!

Mezzacorona Pinot Grigio – This is actually my favorite wine to drink at any time, not only when visiting WDW. Last year, I was able to purchase a glass from the Italy booth at the Epcot Food & Wine Festival. The glass was reasonably priced around $6 and was as always, delicious. If you are a fan of Pinot Grigio, I encourage you to try this one as it is my favorite not only for taste, but also price. (You can find it in New York at Stew Leonard’s Liquor Stores for around $12 a bottle on sale!) I really hope they will be featuring Mezzacorona again at this year’s Food & Wine Festival!

Safari Amber – This beer is offered in essentially every dining location throughout the Animal Kingdom. It’s brewed by Anheuser-Busch specifically for the Animal Kingdom and is reasonably priced around $6. It offers a relatively mild taste, not too hoppy and not too bitter, and is pretty refreshing with a lot of the offerings in the park (especially the food at Flame Tree Barbeque.) The best part- the awesome giraffe tap that each dining location features! Doesn’t it look delicious in the picture on the right!

Blood Orange Margarita – If you love margaritas, then a stop at Cava del Tequila is a necessity during your WDW vacation. Offering tons of delicious options, the Blood Orange Margarita is my favorite, and usually offered at around $12. The drink features EL Mayor Premium Silver tequila, Triple Sec, blood orange juice, and hibiscus syrup and is rimmed with Himalayan salt. This drink is a wonderful balance of flavors and is a favorite of mine because the offering is so unique. I would definitely recommend stopping by Cava del Tequila one day and sampling it!

Neige Premiere Apple Ice Wine – This ice wine was another offering at last year’s Epcot Food & Wine Festival. Located at the Canada booth, this ice wine was pricey ($5.25 for a relatively small glass) but it made more than made up for the price in taste. You can see the size of the glass in comparison to Food & Wine offerings in the picture on the left. It was sweet, strong in apple flavor, and overall absolutely delicious. It was also a nice treat as ice wine in general can be very pricey, so this was a great opportunity to be able to sample it without having to commit to an expensive bottle.

Avocado Margarita – For the final drink on my list, we are returning once again to Cava del Tequila! I’m such a fan of margaritas and the drinks there are just so delicious I couldn’t help but include it twice on my list. The Avocado Margarita is definitely the most unique drink on the list and perhaps one of the most unique ones on property and is priced around $13. It features El Mayor Premium Silver tequila, melon liqueur, fresh avocado, agave nectar, and fresh lime juice and is rimmed in hibiscus Himalayan salt. I personally love avocados, and this drink does a wonderful job of balancing the flavor of both margaritas and fresh avocados in a way in which neither are overpowering, but rather perfectly balanced to offer a delicious and unique drink. If you love avocados or are feeling adventurous, I would definitely recommend this drink!

So there you have it, my favorite drinks in all of WDW! As I said, I am frolicking in Disney as we speak (and probably drinking something listed above!), so I would love to hear from you with some recommendations of other drinks to try!

Cheers!

As loyal followers of the Fish Are Friends, Not Food blog, or Box People might already know, Lou, Christy, Beci, and Tony visited Terra Marketplace at the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival over the WDW Radio e-ticket weekend. None of them are vegan, so, as a vegan I was interested in what they thought of the food, if they would eat it again, and if they learned anything!

I’m excited to share with you an interview with the gang on their experience at Terra Marketplace! So, here we go:

______________________________________________________________________

How would you describe your experience with the vegan food at Terra Marketplace?

Lou- In a word – enlightening! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the offerings there! The flavors were rich and the texture and consistency of the items was not what I had expected

Christy- It was a happy surprise. I am a notoriously picky eater (I ordered children’s chicken nuggets when eating lunch with Lou and Tony at Morocco earlier that weekend.) I also have never been much of a vegetable eater. I had stopped by Terra earlier in the trip to take pictures and was very surprised to see “meat” options listed—Assumption #1 about being vegan (it’s always veggies) ended there.

Beci- I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty the food was as well as the variety of flavors offered on the Terra menu.

Tony- I enjoyed my experience at Terra Marketplace. I always enjoy trying new things, especially where food is involved.

What was your favorite food option at Terra Marketplace?

Lou- The meatless sirloin tips were so good I almost didn’t realize they weren’t beef! But, the curry sauce and the texture of the trickn’ chick’n is something i will definitely return to enjoy again

Christy- You know, I really enjoyed them all equally. I think my surprise at liking them was the dominant emotion.

Beci- I really enjoyed the Chilli Colorado with Beefless Tips and the Chocolate cake with passion fruit. (its chocolate!)

Tony- I would have to say that I probably enjoyed the “beefless beef” (for lack of a better term) the best. The sauce and accompaniments were all very tasty.

Was there anything about the Gardein fake meats that turned you off?

Lou- Not turned off, but the soy smoothie wasn’t my favorite. Not because of the taste, but it was an exceptionally hot day and the consistency was a bit thick and not as cold as I would have liked. It’s more about the weather than the item itself. I’ll try it again later during the Festival.

Christy- The only thing I can say is there did appear to be a lot of the sauces on them, though that was not about the “meat” itself. Both dishes has a consistency and texture that was close to the “real thing.” As Lou had commented, I probably would not have realized a difference if I didn’t KNOW I was at a vegan pavilion. (Assumption #2: If it is “fake meat”– it must be mealy or grainy—ended as well). I think we were all on the alert to find something “different” because we knew it was the vegan pavilion.

Beci- The Chick’n Curry was ok. The consistency was a little off… Not bad, just not great. However the beefless tips were surprisingly yummy in terms of consistency and flavor.

Tony- Both of the Gardein ‘meats’ were quite tasty.

Besides the obvious Babycakes treats, was this the first time you ever tried food intentionally made to be vegan? If you’ve tried vegan options before how did it compare to the food at Terra Marketplace?

Lou- No, I have tried other items before, but were not as tasty, moist and well-prepared as these

Christy- I have not (though I did bring home a bag of the barbeque chips you mentioned in one blog so I could try them!! )

Beci- Never tried Vegan options before because you always think of bland… or tofu .. or vegies. But this experience opened my eyes to the possibilities.

Tony- I rarely eat vegan specific cooking, either at home or at a restaurant, but i do enjoy it as an option, for reasons of healthful eating more than anything else.

After taste-testing a vegan meal, would you order a vegan option off of a menu if there were also meat options available?

Lou- Yes. Dare I say this made a believer out of me!?

Christy- I would. One thing I found interesting was that the pavilion did not advertise itself as vegan. I’m sure those who are vegan would know, but for those who are NOT vegan, the pavilion might open minds to an alternative.

Beci- Good question. I guess it would depend on the choices and price but I might consider it.

Tony- I would certainly consider ordering a vegan entree of of any menu, but I would base the choice more upon what was being offered, and my interest in the preparation/ingredients, more than the fact that it was a vegan option.

Do you wish Terra Marketplace would have offered a different type of vegan dish? If so, what?

Lou- Not really, as I would return to eat both of the main items (and the dessert!) again.

Christy- I am a huge pasta fan, so I would have enjoyed something like that. If seemed the emphasis of the pavilion was to showcase meatless meat, but I would have been open to a vegan meal that was more what I assumed to be “vegan meals” (i.e. meatless).

Beci- After trying the options they presented, I would like to see what other dishes can meet the level they provided with the meatless tips.

Tony- I am a HUGE fan of all things veggie, (contrary to popular belief, I suppose) and I would have enjoyed more options at Terra. I am not sure exactly WHAT I would request, but I am always open to epicurean exploration and trying new things!

What advice would you have for a non-vegan about vegan food?

Lou- Don’t be afraid – I believe in trying everything once and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Christy- Similar to what I tell my children (though sadly don’t always practice myself): You never know if you don’t like it until you try! And put your personal assumptions about vegan food aside. As you have pointed out eloquently, Angie, most of us have been “accidentally vegan” many times already, so it’s not like you haven’t eaten vegan before.

Beci- Epcot Food & Wine is a great opportunity to give it a try! Just a few bites without committing to a full sized entree

Tony- I would honestly tell non-vegans to give it a try, I really did enjoy the options at Terra and was pleasantly surprised with everything they offered. If only to step into the shoes of another, I think it is worth opening yourself up to new and different experiences.

____________________________________________________________

Lou, as a food lover, did you love this food?

—Yes! I’ll be back… oh yes… I will be back!!

Christy, you have a knack for details, what were the lines like at Terra Marketplace compared to the other food booths at Food and Wine? If there was a long line, do you think the vegan food from Terra Marketplace is worth the wait?

—Each time I walked past Terra, there was a decent sized line which moved very efficiently. When we went with Lou, Tony, and Beci, it was only noon so the world Showcase had just gotten going, but we still waited about 5 minutes. At busier times over the weekend, the line was longer, though truthfully not as long as some other pavilions (there were some truly ridiculously long lines!!)

Beci, do you have a lot of people booking through MEI/Mouse fan Travel looking for vegan options in WDW? Would you recommend traveling to Food and Wine, specifically to try Terra Marketplace if it is still offered next year?

— Vegan is a choice that has become more popular over the years, and we do see more clients asking about vegan options on the restaurant menus. Disney does a wonderful job accommodating dietary needs and choices which makes it the perfect vacation destination for anyone, Of course, for anyone who enjoys celebrating food and drink, Epcot Food & Wine is a must do.

Tony, did trying something new, like vegan food, inspire you to try more new things, like have Lou feed you?

— I can neither confirm nor deny the rumor that it was the first time Lou fed or attempted to feed me. More than anything, I think it was Lou’s way of making sure I only got my fair share of the food samples…no more, no less. (He is NOT a good food sharer).

by Caitlin Corsello

Each fall, Epcot plays host to perhaps my favorite event held at Walt Disney World: The International Food & Wine Festival. This year, the festival will be running from September 28 to November 12 and will consist of dozens of booths themed around various countries and regions which offer small portions of scrumptious delicacies and beverages. In addition to the booths, the festival offers seminars, demonstrations, concerts, and exclusive merchandise. While there is plenty to taste and experience, let’s take a closer look into certain aspects to make your visit to the festival even more enjoyable.

Obviously the main attractions of the festival are the food and drinks offered. With two new booths being introduced this year, there are more options to experience than ever before. The two new booths are a Florida one, offering regional cuisine, and the Terra Vegan Marketplace which will offer vegan culinary options. Together with twenty-eight other booths, you could spend an entire day just eating your way around World Showcase!

In order to really enjoy the festival, there are a few tips to follow to help you to be able to experience more without being overwhelmed. First off, I recommend printing out a list and map of the booths and their respective menus. You can find this information and more on the festival on the Disney Food Blog website. Then choose and highlight what food and drinks you would like to sample ahead of time. This will allow you to enter Epcot knowing exactly what you would like to experience and thus eliminates wandering and losing time. I also advise that you approach the festival at a leisurely pace- you want to be able to really enjoy the food and experience and not become too full to carry on. You may also find that you have so many things that you would like to sample that you can separate it into two days! So knowing the volume of food and drinks that you would like to indulge in is crucial in planning before you head to Epcot.

As there are thirty booths to explore, it may be a good decision to visit the festival with a group of people. This allows you the option of ordering several offerings from a given booth and sharing them amongst a group. Not only will this save you money, but it also allows you to experience more of the options that the festival has to offer.

The Food & Wine Festival also offers a unique way of “drinking around the world” that you would not get to experience in the other months of the year. For those who have not tried it, drinking around the world consists of visiting all eleven countries in the World Showcase and sampling a beverage, usually alcoholic, from each. In the future, I am going to dedicate an entire post to this activity, but for now let’s stay focused on the festival and the different approach it provides.

Each booth has a beverage option which contains alcohol and many of these options are drinks that you would not be able to obtain throughout the rest of the year. There is even a Sam Adams beer brewed exclusively for the festival each year. For this year, the exclusive brew will be the “17th Anniversary Festival Beer – Sam Adams Chocolate Bock” offered at the Hops & Barley booth. A fun activity would be to map out the drinks that you would like to try ahead of time and have your own experience of drinking around the world. I recommend also trying this with a group of people as you can then share drinks and sample several options. On a more serious note, if you do choose to engage in drinking around the world, please be responsible and remember to stay hydrated, pace yourself, and make sure you are not drinking on an empty stomach. You don’t want to be that guy in the World Showcase. If you do not drink alcohol, you can still have your own drinking around the world experience as the booths offer numerous non-alcoholic beverages from all parts of the world!

One of the best parts of the Food & Wine Festival involves being able to utilize Disney Dining Plan snack credits for certain food offerings from the various booths. The dining plan can be a great option while visiting Walt Disney World as it provides varying levels of dining options ranging from quick service to signature dining experiences. Snack credits are also supplied with the dining plan for each guest. Often times in the fall, Disney offers the dining plan free on certain dates, many of which overlap with the festival. This is a fantastic thing as plenty of food options being offered at the booths can be purchased by using a snack credit. As some food options can be upwards of seven dollars, this is a great way to really stretch the value of your dining plan and save some extra money. If you are planning on using your snack credits for the festival, consult the list of food options you would like to sample that you created. Make sure you note which foods are eligible for the snack credit and choose the most expensive of the list to utilize your credits on. You want to make sure that you utilize your snack credit on something that is more than a few dollars as opposed to something that may be significantly less expensive.

In addition to the booths, you can also attend the Eat to the Beat concert series, attend seminars and demonstrations, and purchase exclusive festival merchandise at the festival welcome center located in the former Wonders of Life Pavilion in Future World East.

For this year’s festival, there are definitely a few select things that I am greatly looking forward to trying when I visit. On the top of my list is visiting the Canada booth which offers small sized portions of food regularly served in Le Cellier, a steakhouse located within the Canada Pavilion. With Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup, “Le Cellier” Wild Mushroom Beef Filet Mignon with Truffle Butter Sauce, and Chicken Chipotle Sausage with Sweet Corn Polenta and “Minus 8” Onion Jam being offered, guests are provided with the opportunity to sample cuisine offered in the restaurant for lower prices and in smaller portions. Some other things I am looking forward to trying are the Grilled Lamb Chop with Mint Pesto and Potato Crunchies from the Argentina booth, the Dark Chocolate Mousse with Chili and Salted Caramel from the Desserts & Champagne booth, and the Godiva Chocolate Liqueur Iced Coffee from the Belgium booth.

While there is a lot to experience at the Food & Wine Festival, keep in mind that no matter how you explore it there is always going to be great food, tasty drinks, and a good time had by all. Most of all, I hope this post did not make you too hungry!

What are you looking forward to trying the most at this year’s Food & Wine Festival? What was the best thing you ever tried there in the past? Let me know in the comments below, I would love to hear from you!

Summer is quickly wrapping up, and as the calender changes from August to September, we find the Vacation Kingdom of the World making its yearly Autumn transition. With so much going on, it’s time to jump right into the latest edition of the WDW Radio Newswire…..

We kickoff this edition of the Newswire inside Magic Kingdom, where there are several bits of news to address. Let’s begin with Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, which is set to make its 2012 debut in just two weeks. The annual “Hard Ticket” event will run on select dates beginning on Tuesday September 11th, with the final party taking place this year on Friday November 2nd. The party runs from 7pm until midnight, and many of the usual festivities are on tap once again this year, including Mickey’s “Boo to You” Halloween Parade, the Villains Mix and Mingle Stage Show, and the HaloWishes Fireworks spectacular. And of course, trick or treat stations and themed Character meet and greets are also a part of the festivities for 2012. Click here for a complete listing of the party dates, as well as pricing info.

We continue in the Magic Kingdom, where confirmation has just been given pertaining to a new projection show at Cinderella Castle. The new show, entitled Celebrate the Magic, is officially set to make its debut this November. The show will be replacing The Magic, The Memories, and You! projection show, which has been running in one form or another at Cinderella Castle since January 19th, 2011. Celebrate the Magic will be directed by Katy Harris, and it has also been confirmed that the show will feature a new soundtrack completely different from that of The Magic, The Memories, and You. If want to see the old show one more time before it fades into the realm of extinction, you have until Monday September 3rd to do so.

Okay, one more quick newsbit at Magic Kingdom to touch on. For this one, we venture into Fantasyland, where an exterior refurbishment has just begun at Sir Mickey’s. Reminiscent of the exterior refurbs that have been taking place up and down Main Street as well as at other points throughout the park, Sir Mickey’s is now covered in tarps. But despite the cosmetic inconvenience, it’s “business as usual” at the gift shop, as Sir Mickey’s will be remaining open throughout the duration of the construction. No word yet on the length of the refurb, but when the tarps do come down, I’ll be sure to report it.

Time to jump on the Monorail and Park Hop over to Epcot Center, where the 2012 edition of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival is nearing its start date. The event will be kicking off this year on Friday September 28th, with festivities set to conclude on Monday November 12th. The 46 day run will give the 2012 edition of Food & Wine the distinction of being the longest-running festival in the event’s seventeen year history! The usual cast of kiosks will be offering up a delicious array of their region’s finest food and drinks, and there’s even going to be two new kiosks in play for 2012. First up is Florida Local, which will include white corn arepa with mangalista pork rilette and Florida shrimp ceviche on the menu. And be sure to wash it down with a Florida Orange Grove “Hurricane Class 5″ or a tasty brew from the Florida Beer Company. The second 2012 “rookie” kiosk will be located in the all-new TERRA Marketplace, and will feature an assortment of vegan dishes to choose from. Menu highlights include the trick’n chick’n curry, Silk berry smoothie, and chocolate cake served with passion fruit sorbet and coconut foam. In total, 29 kiosks will be on display around World Showcase Promenade. As with years past, the Wonders of Life pavilion will play the role of Festival Welcome Center. Culinary seminars hosted by celebrity chefs and various HGTV personalities, as well as the Eat to the Beat! Concert Series will also be back for 2012. Click here For more info on this year’s event.

For our final bit of news today, we venture out of the parks and into the resorts. The Main Feature Pool at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort, the Surfboard Bay Pool, has just closed down for refurbishment. There is no official opening date for the pool, but a “late September” re-opening is expected. This should put the refurb time at just about a month. Also, if you’re going to be staying at All-Star Sports during the closure and you happen to be a fan of the aquatics; fear not. There is a second, smaller pool at the resort known as the Grand Slam Pool, which will indeed be open throughout the duration of the construction at Surfboard Bay Pool.

Well, that’s gonna do it for today’s update. But before we call it a wrap, I’d like to introduce an all-new interactive feature to the Newswire. Starting today, each edition will now feature a poll question. The question will have to do with one or more of the newsbits featured on the Newswire. For today’s poll question, we look to the upcoming Events on tap at WDW…

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Hello and welcome to The WDW Radio Show – Your Walt Disney World Information Station. I am your host, Lou Mongello, and this is show #243 for the week of October 9, 2011.

The annual Epcot International Food and Wine Festival has become a destination event for both Disney World enthusiasts and food lovers from around the world. In addition to the kiosks, seminars, tastings and signings, there are also a number of special events to further enhance the experience. This week, we’ll review two of those special celebrations – The Swan and Dolphin Food and Wine Classic, and the Party For The Senses. We’ll discuss the venues, menus, entertainment, recommendations, value and more.

I’ll have a few announcements and then play more of your voicemails at the end of the show.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s episode of the WDW Radio Show

Thanks for listening! Be sure to tune in next week!
