Yesterday marked a milestone in Walt Disney World history, as one of the original rides, Snow White’s Scary Adventures, greeted guests for the final time.

As we know after the closure of other rides, Disney Imagineers often pay homage to attractions gone by.  Whether it be placing a small memorial in the Haunted Mansion cemetery (Long Live Mr. Toad!) or hang props in other parts of the park (a la Dream Finder’s flying machine), these nods to our Disney memories help to keep the story alive in our minds, even if the attraction has long since closed its doors.

This week, our Imagineering challenge will not be driven by a picture but rather by this tradition of honoring attractions.  If YOU were a Disney Imagineer, how would you honor Snow White’s Scary Adventure?  Would you hide an apple in the new Princess Fairytale Hall?  How about painting a “hidden Dopey” in Beast’s castle?  Would you place a ride vehicle somewhere?

In “Snow White’s Scary Adventures” in Walt Disney World, you ride through the tale which is true to the original 1937 film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” the world’s first full-length animated feature. The attraction takes you on a three-minute trip through scenes from Grimm’s fairy tale, and includes appearances by the Wicked Witch and all seven dwarfs. In addition to traveling through three dimensional settings from the film, flat artwork was layered throughout to give the effect of riding past animated scenes.

Along the way, the Evil Queen turns to her book of potions to conjure up a spell to finally rid herself of Snow White forever. So first, she must turn herself into the old, peddler woman – a cunning disguise which allows her to arrive at the dwarfs’ cottage disguised and persuade Snow White to bite into a poisoned apple. The recipe in the book calls for Mummy Dust, Black of Night, Old Hag’s Cackle and a Scream of Fright. In the film, she said, “Now, a formula to transform my beauty into ugliness, change my queenly raiment to a peddler’s cloak. Mummy dust to make me old. To shroud my clothes, the black of night. To age my voice, an old hag’s cackle. To whiten my hair, a scream of fright. A blast of wind, to fan my hate! A thunderbolt, to mix it well. Now, begin thy magic spell!”

Of course, one cannot simply pick such an apple from a poison apple tree, so she bookmarks the page in her book of spells for just the right potion. She conjures the spell in the film by calling out, “When she breaks the tender peel, to taste the apple in my hand, her breath will still, her blood congeal. Then I’ll be fairest in the land! But wait! There may be an antidote. Nothing must be overlooked. Oh, here it is! “The Victim of the Sleeping Death can be revived only by Love’s First Kiss. Loves First Kiss! Bah! No fear of that. The dwarfs will think she’s dead. She’ll be buried alive!”

While winding your way through the Walt Disney World attraction, the book is often difficult to read. But thanks to friend and contributor, Marc Lorenzo, you can copy down the recipe for yourself.

 

Of course, we know that Love’s First Kiss is the only antidote… and like any Disney fairy tale, they live… well, you know… Happily Ever After.
