Finding Disney in the Perfect Halloween Costume

Extraordinary Magic in Everyday Life
Jack Skellington and Sally from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before ChristmasWhen mid-October rolls around, it’s full throttle through December. More than any other time of year, this is the part of the calendar when it’s easiest to find Disney. In traditions that commemorate these special times of year, we experiences glimpses of that Disney spirit: in obvious inclusions of things like themed movies, and in more subtle ways in which the essence of Disney inhabits our activities.

This is certainly true for Halloween costumes. It’s a perfectly legitimate excuse to pretend to be your favorite Disney hero, princess, villain, sidekick, or star. Over the years, many popular characters have swept the market by storm as their respective franchises become sensations and thus prompt high Halloween costume sales. Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, Hannah Montana, and, of course now, Frozen all come to mind when thinking about the swarms of those entities’ mini-counterparts trick-or-treating around the neighborhood.

With the recent trend of attending the parks in costume, Halloween isn’t the only occasion in which an outfit prompts creativity inspired by a character. All of these engage the participant to embrace their Disney Side, as it were, to really reach down to that place inside themselves where, or rather who, they find Disney most.

Some of my personal favorite Halloween costumes have had a Disney touch. When I was three, obsessed over Toy Story (which hasn’t changed much!), I went as Woody and my younger brother was Buzz. A few years later, my grandmother made a Sorcerer Mickey costume for me.  Last year, I switched and donned Mr. Lightyear’s gear.

How about you? What’s been your favorite Disney Halloween costume you’ve worn or seen?
