1. True of False: The building that houses the Mitsukoshi shopping store, Teappan Edo, and Tokyo Dining is based off of a Mitsukoshi department store in Japan.

Established in 1673, the Mitsukoshi brand is the oldest and largest department store chain in the world!  As such, Epcot‘s Mitsukoshi store has a large amount of retail real estate and a prime location at the entrance to the Japan pavilion.  The impressive Mitsukoshi building is not based on a department store design but is instead inspired by the architectural design of a ceremonial and coronation hall found in Japan’s Kyoto Imperial Palace grounds. I was surprised to learn that the Mitsukoshi building has it’s own name – Shishinden – which is a Japanese term meaning ceremonial hall.

2. What is the name of Japan’s quick service dining location?

  1. Nori Hous
  2. Katsura Grill – Previously known as the Yakitori House, this quick service eatery went through an extensive renovation in 2011 (and grand opening in December 2011) to become Katsura Grill. The inspiration for the restaurant’s name comes from the real life Japanese building found in Japan’s Katsura Imperial Villa – the Shoken-tei or tea house.
  3. Tori Dining

3. How many tiers are located on the pagoda building in the Japan pavilion?

  1. Five – Japan’s five tiered pagoda known as the Goju-no-to is inspired by an ancient 8th century pagoda found at the Horyuji Temple. True to Japanese form where everything has meaning, the five tiers represent the elements earth, water, fire, wind, and sky.
  2. Four
  3. Six

4. True of False: The name of the structure located in the World Showcase Lagoon by the Japan pavilion is called the Torii Gate.

Japan’s Torii Gate is almost an exact replica of a Torii Gate found off the shores of Itsukushima. On this gate can be found one of my favorite small details – at the base of the gate, Imagineers have placed fabricated barnacles to indicate the advanced age of the gate.

5. What was the name of the original proposed attraction for the Japan pavilion?

  1. Meet the World – Similar to the Germany pavilion, the Japan pavilion was also slated to have an enclosed attraction on opening day. This attraction would have featured the history of Japan in four acts. The attraction was to be housed in the large castle set in the far back of the pavilion. Unfortunately, due to lack of funding this attraction never came to be in World Showcase, but interestingly did open in Tokyo Disneyland.
  2. Hello World
  3. Tokyo Hello
