WDW Tip of the Week: Unlocking Your Resort Room with the My Disney Experience App

During a recent visit to my happy place, I found myself unexpectedly locked out of my resort room. I stood in the hallway, red faced, as a sudden rush of panic and embarrassment set in. I remembered leaving my Magic Band on the night table by my bed. I kept thinking, Agh! What an amateur move! This isn’t something that happens to a seasoned Disney traveler like me! Now what?

I decided to go down to the front desk, incognito, of course! Under my large vacation sunglasses and baseball cap, I carefully made my way to an available Cast Member. With my best “whispering voice,” I explained my dilemma. I was quickly assured that this sort of thing happens “all the time,” even to seasoned pros. They quickly took a walk with me and unlocked my door. Something I learned that day is that I could have handled this on my own, using my cell phone!

Yacht Club door - copyright Jack Miller, Flickr Creative CommonsMy Disney Experience App Screenshot copyright DisneyThe Cast Member explained that by using the My Disney Experience App.  First, I needed to be sure that Bluetooth was turned on on my phone.  Then, I could just log in to the app, open the bottom right option (the one that looks like three lines stacked on top of each other), select the “Resort Hotel” button (circled in red in the image to the right), and go to the “Unlock Door” feature. Each room has a “digital key” that will open your door just by placing your mobile device up to the door lock. Not only is this feature available at all Walt Disney World resorts, it also allows hotel guests access pool areas, fitness centers, and arcades. Next time you want to “unlock the magic,” remember the My Disney Experience App!
