Spoiler Support Group Preview — June 2022

–Tyler Johnson, WDW Radio Team

Back again with this month’s Spoiler Support Group feature and we have 5-ish things to look forward to on Disney+ and a space adventure for the big screen that is 27 years in the making.

Let’s get to it, Spoilerites! And leave a comment for what you think we should call ourselves instead of “Spoilerites”.

Ms. Marvel Premiere (June 8)

Kamala Khan’s story is a dream-come-true, coming-of-age, teenage adventure. The fantasy of being a superhero becomes a reality in Marvel Studio’s latest Disney+ Series Ms. Marvel. This is also Marvel’s first Disney+ series to be rated TV-PG. I think this is going to be an excellent entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to introduce younger kids to and bring them into the larger landscape of Marvel storytelling. (Bonus points if your child, like the main character Kamala Khan, dreams of having superpowers and saving the world.) If you’re looking for more insight on the character and some excellent stories, check out the various series of the Marvel Comics title, Champions (Kamala and Miles Morales are like, totally bffs in this series.)

AND

Before we move on to what’s next on the list, I have to add that to get you ready for the series, there is a documentary short entitled, A Fan’s Guide to Ms. Marvel streaming June 1. Check that out before the next MCU show drops one week later.

Family Reboot (June 15)

To keep the feel-good family vibes going, I wanted to highlight Family Reboot, a reality series that helps families slow down; get away from devices, work, and sports; and give them the time and tools to reconnect. This will certainly have heartwarming Disney feels that leave every family watching pondering ways they can reboot their own lives. All episodes of Family Reboot are streaming June 15.

Lightyear (June 17)

“Wait… What is this?” was definitely my reaction seeing the reveal of the story of the real life Buzz Lightyear, but as someone who grew up with the Space Ranger toy – T O Y. Toy! – and who misquoted him as saying, “star command, drink your coffee” as a child, I am thrilled for this movie! Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear fighting the Evil Emperor Zurg, sworn enemy of the Galactic Alliance alongside his pet cat, Sox? Sign me up! He’s not a child’s play thing anymore.

AND

Disney+ will give us another bonus for this feature film with the documentary, Beyond Infinity: Buzz and the Journey to Lightyear which will explore the cultural impact of Buzz Lightyear and how he has been reshaped in an all new story for an all new generation. Did you know Barbie’s quote in Toy Story 2 about not having enough inventory to meet demand for Buzz Lightyear toys was a real life story?! I’m willing to bet they go into that for this doc.

Rise (June 24)

Rise is the inspirational sports story of Milwaukee Bucks star, NBA Champion, and MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and his brother Thanasis. This tale of hard work, determination, and desperation traverses the lives of Giannis and his family as they overcome immigration obstacles all the way to the two brothers becoming NBA Champions and household names. Fans of basketball, or just fans of seeing families battle adversity as a unit, should definitely check our Rise.

Baymax! (June 29)

Next to my intense fandom gushing that coincides with Marvel and Star Wars, there is my favorite Disney character, Baymax. Put it on my cast member name tag. This huggable marshmallow came into our lives with a charming “hello” and a fist bump back in 2014, and now your personal healthcare companion is back. There’s excellent animation, killer comedy, and no doubt some Big Hero 6 team action packed adventures we can all go on with Baymax and the whole gang! I can’t begin to describe how pumped I am for more Baymax in my life. *fist bumps* Ba-la-la-la!

And that does it for the June preview. Which series or film are you most excited for? Any 90s babies thrilled for Lightyear? Maybe you love Kamala Khan in the Marvel comics and can’t wait for Ms. Marvel. Perhaps you’re anticipating another release I didn’t list here.

Let the WDW Radio Clubhouse know in the facebook group what you are most looking forward to see in June 2022. In the meantime, may the force be with you.

My name is Tyler and I live in Georgia with my wife, Ragan. I am a huge fan of the Disney parks after reigniting my childhood love of Disney on a trip in which I proposed! Since that 2017 trip, we have been back to our home away from home several times, and like many of you, we’re always in the pre-planning stage of a Disney vacation whether it happens or not. I have been a huge fan of Marvel and Star Wars my entire life on a very deep and highly invested level, and I hope my love and passion for these properties (as well as all Disney storytelling on and off the screen) comes through.
