Everything You Need to Know About Din Tai Fung: A New Asian Dining Destination in Downtown Disney at Disneyland Resort

The anticipation is building as Din Tai Fung, the internationally renowned restaurant brand, opens its first-ever standalone location in the Downtown Disney District at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. Starting June 24, 2024, the restaurant will offer a soft opening, available by reservation only, with limited menu service from 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Full-service dining will begin in July, and we will keep you updated on the grand opening date as soon as it is confirmed.

A Taste of Asia at Downtown Disney

Din Tai Fung’s arrival brings a new dimension of Asian-focused dining to the Downtown Disney District. Known globally for its exquisite Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) and a commitment to culinary excellence, this new location is the first freestanding Din Tai Fung built from the ground up. The 7,500-square-foot restaurant has been meticulously designed by the acclaimed Rockwell Group, marrying modern architecture with traditional Chinese elements.

Design Highlights

The architectural design is a dramatic, contemporary interpretation of a traditional Chinese pavilion rooftop. Guests are welcomed by a suspended, beaded installation over the central bar, illuminated by traditional Chinese pendants. The dining rooms, flanking either side of the bar, feature open and airy spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor dining experiences.

The exterior of the restaurant pays homage to traditional Chinese architectural elements with a modern twist. The pavilion-style rooftop is both eye-catching and culturally significant, designed to evoke the elegance and history of Chinese design while fitting seamlessly into the vibrant atmosphere of Downtown Disney. As guests approach the entrance, they are greeted by an impressive display of artistry and craftsmanship, setting the stage for the culinary journey that awaits inside.

Inside, the restaurant’s layout is thoughtfully designed to enhance the dining experience. The central bar area is a focal point, with a suspended, beaded installation that adds a touch of sophistication and intrigue. Traditional Chinese pendants softly illuminate the space, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. The open floor plan allows for natural light to flood the dining rooms, while floor-to-ceiling windows offer stunning views of the surrounding area.

Exclusive Collections

To celebrate the opening, Din Tai Fung is releasing limited-edition collections of apparel and accessories, inspired by its Taiwanese origins and mascot, Bao Bao. These exclusive items will be available only at this location once it officially opens in July. The collections include streetwear-inspired apparel, character-driven items, and collectible enamel pins.

The first collection, titled DTF Essentials, features streetwear-inspired apparel with unisex fits. Each piece is designed with an embroidered image of the original Din Tai Fung storefront in Taiwan, paying tribute to the brand’s humble beginnings and its journey to becoming a global culinary icon. The Anaheim Collection, on the other hand, is a fun, character-driven line that prominently features Bao Bao, the restaurant company’s beloved mascot. This collection includes a variety of clothing items and accessories, each designed to capture the playful spirit and cultural heritage of Din Tai Fung.

In addition to apparel, the limited-edition collections will also include collectible enamel pins. These pins are designed to commemorate the opening of the new location and will be available for a limited time. The first set of pins will be released in July, with additional sets planned for later in the summer. Each pin features intricate designs and vibrant colors, making them a must-have for collectors and fans of Din Tai Fung alike.

Culinary Excellence

Din Tai Fung’s culinary artistry is showcased in its Xiao Long Bao, each dumpling crafted through an 18-fold process to achieve the perfect balance of delicate wrapper and savory filling. Other popular dishes include Spicy Wontons and the Pear Lychee Martini. The new location will also feature an expanded bar menu with an extended wine list and additional liquor options.

Xiao Long Bao, the dish that catapulted Din Tai Fung to international fame, remains the centerpiece of the restaurant’s menu. These delicate soup dumplings are handmade daily, with each dumpling requiring a precise 18-fold process to ensure the perfect marriage of a thin, delicate wrapper and a rich, savory filling. The filling, often referred to as achieving the “Golden Ratio,” is a blend of high-quality ingredients that create a burst of flavor with every bite.

In addition to Xiao Long Bao, Din Tai Fung offers a variety of other dishes that showcase the restaurant’s commitment to culinary excellence. The Spicy Wontons, for example, are a fan favorite, featuring a signature spicy sauce that perfectly complements the tender wontons. The Pear Lychee Martini, made with Grey Goose La Poire Vodka and St-Germain, is a refreshing cocktail that pairs beautifully with the restaurant’s menu.

The new Downtown Disney location will also introduce an expanded bar menu, offering a wide selection of wines, cocktails, and spirits. The extended wine list features both domestic and international selections, carefully curated to enhance the dining experience. The bar menu will also include a variety of unique cocktails, each crafted to complement the flavors of Din Tai Fung’s dishes.

Art & Architecture

Designed by the acclaimed Rockwell Group, the new restaurant’s exterior is a dramatic, contemporary take on a traditional Chinese pavilion rooftop structure. A suspended, beaded installation over the circular central bar greets guests upon entering the restaurant, with traditional style Chinese pendants softly illuminating the space. DTF’s signature immersive dumpling expo kitchen serves as a backdrop, inviting guests to witness the artistry behind the dumpling-making process firsthand.

The location features a climate-controlled patio area, with bamboo screens and landscaping contributing to guests feeling as though they were sitting in a garden. The dining rooms, one on each side of the central bar, are enhanced by exposed, curved ceiling beams that mirror the shape of the exterior roof and green tones that connect to the lawn outdoors.

The dumpling expo kitchen is a highlight of the dining experience at Din Tai Fung. This open kitchen allows guests to observe the meticulous process of dumpling-making, from the preparation of the dough to the final steaming. The transparency of the kitchen not only adds an element of entertainment but also underscores the restaurant’s commitment to quality and authenticity.
