Believe it or not, Indy’s Disney Parks debut wasn’t in a ride of his own – it was as part of The Great Movie Ride at the then-new Disney-MGM Studios in 1989.
Guests rode through the Well of Souls scene, complete with Indy and Sallah lifting the Ark of the Covenant. It was a quiet yet powerful tribute that placed Indiana Jones among legends like Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz. Fun fact: observant fans noticed small “inaccuracies,” like the characters being reversed or Indy’s whip positioned differently – all intentional for better guest visibility.

Later that same year, the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! debuted in Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios), bringing the action of Raiders of the Lost Ark to life with real explosions, massive moving sets, and live stunt performers.
It was groundbreaking – not just for the thrills, but for showing guests how movies were made. Jason Surrell shares what made the show so innovative, how it inspired future Imagineers, and what it’s like to stand on that stage with the action happening all around you.

🎢 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril – Parisian Thrills with a Twist
In 1993, Indiana Jones arrived at Disneyland Paris with Indiana Jones et le Temple du Péril – a high-speed looping coaster through a crumbling jungle temple.
While it was meant to be a temporary thrill fix to boost attendance, it became a permanent addition. It offered a rare inversion in a Disney attraction and, for a time, even operated in reverse.
Jason breaks down how this outdoor coaster is one of the most intense Indy experiences to date – despite having very little narrative. Fans often imagine it as a nod to the Temple of Doom mine cart chase.
🚙 Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye – A Game Changer
In 1995, Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye opened in Disneyland… and redefined what a Disney dark ride could be.
With groundbreaking enhanced motion vehicle (EMV) technology, randomized paths, and a queue filled with secrets, this ride placed guests directly into the story alongside Indy.
From the moment you enter the temple ruins and decipher glyphs in the queue to the unforgettable reveal of the temple chamber (arguably one of the most awe-inspiring moments in any Disney attraction), this ride is a masterpiece of placemaking and storytelling.
💡 And yes – Jason reveals why this attraction’s queue, soundtrack, and safety video (featuring John Rhys-Davies as Sallah) are just as legendary as the ride itself.
🌍 The Indiana Jones Expedition – The Land That Never Was
The Ultimate Guide to Indiana Jones in the Disney Parks wouldn’t be complete without looking at what never got built… like the Indiana Jones Expedition.”
Did you know that Disneyland almost received an entire Indiana Jones land called the Indiana Jones Expedition?
Originally conceived as a multi-experience mini-land with:
- A mine car coaster
- A walkthrough labyrinth
- A rugged troop transport ride (which became the EMV dark ride)
- A railroad tie-in and Jungle Cruise views
This unbuilt concept lives on in stunning concept art and the DNA of existing attractions.
Jason calls this “the white whale” of themed entertainment – and we break down why it was never built… and whether we might see something similar someday.
🎉 One Night Only: Raiders of the Lost Jedi Temple of Doom
In 2010, during Star Wars Celebration at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Jason co-wrote and directed a wild mashup show called Raiders of the Lost Jedi Temple of Doom: A Fan Film of Epic Proportions.
It was Indy meets Star Wars meets comedy sketch show, and featured surprise appearances by Mark Hamill, Ashley Eckstein, Jeremy Bulloch, and Seth Green – plus pyrotechnics, in-jokes, and the Flying Wing getting blown up by an X-wing.
Jason shares stories from behind the curtain, including how George Lucas himself reacted to the show!
