A Tale of Two Rapunzel Towers

Who remembers the “Tangled” Rapunzel Tower at the 2011 Epcot Flower & Garden Festival?  We happened to be at the Walt Disney World Resort on IMG_8983the morning after they installed the tower.  In true Walt Disney World style, one day the tower wasn’t there and the next day, there it was, artfully nestled into the landscape as if it had been there forever.  Located in World Showcase between the Germany and Italy pavilions, the tower had windows that opened and closed, from which flowed Rapunzel’s hair.  And when the windows opened, you could watch Rapunzel’s fiber optic, golden tresses glow and hear the sweet sound of her singing the Healing Incantation Song.

After the 2011 Epcot Flower & Garden Festival, everyone hoped that Walt Disney World would leave the “Tangled” Rapunzel Tower at Epcot.  But, it was removed at the end of the Festival.  Many fans were disappointed—until it was announced that a new Rapunzel Tower would rise in Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom in 2013.

Located in the area once known as the Magic Kingdom Fantasyland Skyway building, the new Rapunzel  Tower sits atop a rocky cliff, crowning a new “Tangled” themed restroom complex.  Less fantasy and more functional, this tower serves to mark the location of helpful guest amenities, which include tables, benches, and cell phone charging stations. The area is also wonderfully detailed, with painted murals, a waterfall, glowing lanterns in the courtyard, and plenty of decorative frying pans.

We miss the special effects of the original “Tangled” Rapunzel Tower.  But the Fantasyland Rapunzel Tower adds an element of whimsy to an important, yet functional need in the Magic Kingdom.  And for fun—on your next visit, see if you can locate all of the hidden Pascals strategically located among the rocks.
