The story of how Walt Disney’s first idea for a haunted house in Disneyland came to become the legendary Haunted Mansion is a long, circuitous one, and reads like a Hollywood movie. It’s filled with mystery, suspense, a cast of interesting (and often conflicting) characters, laughter, a little bit of magic, and a payoff at the end that still entertains and thrills guests decades later. This week, to celebrate the anniversary of one of Disney’s most legendary and time-tested attractions, we’re going to go back to the very beginnings of how the concept of the attraction came to be, its many stages, stories, players, secrets, troubles, and how it eventually became the Haunted Mansions we know and love.
