23 Biggest Takeaways from Destination D23 2025

Destination D23 2025 was the largest Disney fan event ever, filled with history, heritage, and hidden surprises. In this week’s WDW Radio podcast, we break down the 23 biggest takeaways – including attraction updates, upcoming films, Disney Cruise Line reveals, Disney Villains news, and even one surprise announcement hiding in plain sight that could signal what’s to come.

The largest Destination D23 to date brought more than 4,000 fans together at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort for three days of unforgettable Disney magic. Over the weekend, we experienced surprising announcements, emotional tributes, rare history, and an energy that reminded us why these gatherings are so special.

In this week’s WDW Radio podcast, I break down the 23 biggest takeaways from Destination D23 2025, covering everything from Walt Disney World and Disneyland to Disney Cruise Line, Disney+ and theatrical releases, international parks, and more.

The Energy of Destination D23

This year’s event felt different – not just because of its record-breaking size, but because of the sense of community in the room. Fans weren’t just spectators. They were part of the story. From merchandise halls to late-night conversations, the entire weekend was filled with connection and shared love for Disney.

D23 Expo Returns and Expanded Event Calendar

One of the biggest reveals was the announcement that the D23 Expo returns to Anaheim in August 2026, expanding once again to the Anaheim Convention Center and the Honda Center. Jodi Benson will serve as the official D23 Fan Ambassador. In addition, Disney announced a packed D23 events calendar for 2025 and 2026, bringing celebrations, screenings, and behind-the-scenes tours to fans across the country.

Film and Disney+ Announcements

Destination D23 delivered a wave of excitement for Disney films and streaming content:

  • Toy Story 5 – featuring a toys-versus-tech storyline, with a first look that won over skeptics.
  • Pixar Slate – including Hoppers (2026), The Incredibles 3 (2028), and Coco 2 (2028+).
  • Disney Animation – preview of Hexed, a magical original story coming November 2026.
  • Marvel – teaser for Avengers: Doomsday, with Paul Rudd returning as Ant-Man and Robert Downey Jr. confirmed.

These announcements reignited excitement not just for Disney+, but for getting back into theaters and experiencing films with fellow fans.

Historic Carousel of Progress Update

For the first time in decades, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom is receiving a major update – including a new introductory scene featuring a Walt Disney Audio-Animatronics figure. This addition keeps Walt’s spirit and voice alive in one of his most personal attractions, blending history with new storytelling.

Villains Land and Conjured Architecture

Disney confirmed details of the much-anticipated Villains Land coming to Magic Kingdom. Imagineers revealed a design philosophy called conjured architecture – a blend of art nouveau inspiration from Paris and Barcelona, transformed with dark, spell-like motifs. This promises a richly detailed environment that will finally bring Disney’s villains center stage.

Tron Overlay and Film Tie-In

Tron Lightcycle Run will receive its first major overlay to promote the upcoming Tron: Ares film. Featuring red-orange lighting and a Nine Inch Nails soundtrack, this seasonal change marks a bold move in connecting parks with cinematic releases.

International Parks and Expansions

Highlights included:

  • Disneyland Paris – World of Frozen opens in spring 2026 as Walt Disney Studios Park becomes Disney Adventure World.
  • Hong Kong Disneyland – new Moana-inspired table service restaurant, Wayfinders.
  • Tokyo DisneySea & Shanghai Disney Resort – Halloween offerings and new entertainment experiences.

These updates emphasize Disney’s commitment to evolving its parks worldwide.

Dining and Storytelling Spaces

Destination D23 also highlighted immersive dining and lounge concepts:

  • Beak & Barrel Tavern – Magic Kingdom’s newest pirate-themed venue, blending the best of Trader Sam’s, Oga’s Cantina, and Haunted Mansion Parlor.
  • Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Destiny – villain-themed encounters, experiential cocktails at The Sanctum, and the continuation of the Haunted Mansion Parlor.
  • Napa Rose Reimagining – Disneyland’s signature restaurant undergoes a major redesign, blending craftsman elegance with modern sophistication.

Rare Castle History and Updates

Fans were treated to never-before-seen images and stories about Disney castles worldwide. Key highlights included:

  • Cinderella Castle returning to its classic blue, gray, and cream color scheme.
  • Insights into Sleeping Beauty Castle’s design and rare overlays.
  • Hidden details like Shanghai’s swan sculptors and Paris’s infamous “snail” spires.

These updates underscored the philosophy of plussing – Walt’s belief in continual improvement.

Disneyland Handcrafted Documentary

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Leslie Iwerks unveiled a trailer for Disneyland Handcrafted, premiering winter 2025 on Disney+ and YouTube. This documentary uses never-before-seen footage to tell the story of Disneyland’s construction through the eyes of artisans, craftsmen, and the people who made Walt’s dream a reality.

Disney Villains Everywhere

From parks and cruise ships to merchandise and stage shows, Disney Villains are taking over:

  • Villains Land development at Magic Kingdom.
  • Disney Villains Unfairly Ever After show at Hollywood Studios.
  • Oogie Boogie Bash enhancements, including new villain encounters like Syndrome.
  • Bath & Body Works Villains Collection and Mattel’s Ursula collectibles.

Haunted Mansion Holiday – A Murder So Foul

A new gingerbread house centerpiece, A Murder So Foul, will debut in Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion Holiday, featuring 13 gingerbread crows and over 200 pounds of dough. This whimsical yet dark tradition continues to delight fans every Halloween season.
